This has been a hit with every Southern friend I’ve ever presented it to! You can enjoy a balanced supper with oven-baked french fries and coleslaw.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 4
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  2. 1 ½ pounds catfish fillets, cut into serving pieces
  3. 1 cup cornmeal
  4. 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning
  5. 1 teaspoon paprika
  6. 1 teaspoon white sugar
  7. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  8. 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  9. 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce or water

Instructions

  1. Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 13×9 glass baking dish with the oil, and set aside.
  2. Rinse the catfish fillets, and pat dry. In a shallow bowl, combine the cornmeal, creole seasoning, paprika, sugar, and black pepper. Combine the eggs and hot sauce or water in a another bowl. Dip the fillets in the egg mixture, dredge in the cornmeal mixture, and arrange in the baking pan.
  3. Bake for 15 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown. Turn once during cooking. Place catfish on a paper-towel lined plate, and serve immediately with additional hot sauce.

I am not a catfish fan but hubby LOVES it. I made this exactly as written with only 1 substitution. I didn’t have Creole seasoning but I did have Old Bay. My bake time was 20 min because I wanted the internal temp to be 170. It turned out WONDERFUL. I will definitely be making this again and again based on how much hubby enjoyed it.

The cat fish was excellant! I had the hot sauce on the side..my husband doesn’t do a lot of heat! Our grandson was visiting & loved it

This was great! I did cook it a little longer than suggested due to the size of the filets. It was delicious!

Delicious! Made the recipe as above but cut into ‘tender’ sized pieces cooked it in an air fryer for 9 minutes. Perfect.

I mostly followed the recipe. I had some Cajun seasoned cornmeal so I used that and cut it with about half flour as I had some flour I wanted to finish up. I also cooked in cast iron skillet in the onion. Turned out very crispy will definitely make again. Same crispy flavor without all the fried food smell in my tiny house.

OMG this was so delicious! I just wiped the glass dish with shorting like I would a loaf pan. Very crispy. Made as is with no changes.

This is great. I used 3 fillets, intending to have leftovers, and I am currently finishing it up. Yes, I ate it all in one sitting. It’s that good. My oven is dumb sometimes about getting up to the temperature, so I ended up broiling it, which worked just fine! Very crispy and delicious.

Hello! We were given a big bag of fresh fillets and chunked catfish and neither of us had ever had a catfish fry, sooooo… I found this recipe and here is our experience: Not having Creole seasoning – looked up how to make our own (there are many recipes!) had all ingredients for a jerk recipe so made it. We followed rest of instructions for baking which in our opinion is okay…the flavor is there we could not get a “crunch” on the crust…is a healthier option though. Since we had so much we decided to try deep frying as well and we are here to say we burnt out tongues eating out of the basket it is that good!!! We froze quite a bit to pull out for quick meals…have not pulled yet so no review of that. Have 4 stars only because couldn’t get crunch on baked fish. 🙂

I left out the hot sauce, but did use Tony Chachere’s and found it just spicy enough for me. I love how crispy it came out without frying! Definitely will make this again – so easy.

I didn’t have cornmeal. I used seasoned Zatarain’s fish fry mix instead of cornmeal and the other seasonings. I still used the egg and hot sauce. I used a light tasting olive oil instead of the vegetable oil. I was amazed at the crispness of the fish. My entire family loved it. I will definitely make again.

UPDATE: I love catfish and this is my go-to catfish recipe. I love it and make it all the time. Our local grocery store has had catfish on sale for a month-plus and I always use this recipe. 2/8: Excellent and easy to make. I’ve made this twice now in 10 days and only changed the egg to Egg Beaters. It’s the easiest way to prepare fish for baking and comes out nice and tasty every time. Love it!

Half of my breading fell off when I turned it halfway through. I am going to try a longer cooking time and see if that works better for me. Easy cooking method and good flavor.
