BBQ Tuna Fritters

  4.2 – 103 reviews  • Tuna

The ideal dessert is a batch of these Italian-style ricotta cheese cookies. Since the baked cookies freeze so well, the recipe makes a huge batch, which is ideal because the ricotta keeps the cookies moist. Never freeze unbaked dough. They can be adorned with candy sprinkles, colored sugar, or chopped candied cherries.

Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (5 ounce) can light tuna in water, drained
  2. 1 egg
  3. ⅔ cup quick-cooking oats
  4. 3 tablespoons barbeque sauce
  5. 3 tablespoons chopped green onion
  6. ½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste
  7. ½ teaspoon dried savory
  8. 1 pinch salt
  9. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together the tuna, egg and oats until blended. Mix in the barbeque sauce, green onion, hot pepper sauce, savory, and salt.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Spoon tablespoonfuls of the tuna mixture into the pan, and flatten slightly. Smaller patties hold together better. Cook until browned on each side, about 3 minutes per side.

Very tasty, and easy to make. I thought the BBQ might overpower the tuna, so I used 1 Tbs, also I had Old Bay hot sauce so I used that, and put some Old Bay seasoning in the mix. I also added an Egg white wth the egg.

What a great easy, inexpensive, and versatile recipe and did I mention fast? I followed the directions but used regular chopped onions instead of green onions and a different sauce. We ate them on pretzel burger buns and everyone liked them. I will experiment with different sauces next time but this recipe is a keeper for sure.

Pretty simple to make and allows you to transform a lowly can of tuna into something a bit fancier than your typical tuna fish sandwich

I have made these a few times. I’ve not added or deleted anything. And every time they have come out perfect. I to thought, hmmm odd combination of ingredients. Still, so glad I took a chance. Should say, it was because of the reviews that convinced me to try

I hate tuna casserole so the only time I eat tuna is in a cold sandwich but this is a nice change of pace to the ubiquitous tuna salad. The ingredients do sound odd but it had favorable reviews so I gave it a shot. I strained my tuna as I always do when I make a tuna salad but I think I should have left the extra moisture in as it looked really dry upon mixing so I added an extra egg. I otherwise followed the recipe and served it on top of bed of spinach greens and sliced tomatoes with a home made Caesar dressing . Makes a good meal or snack for those on a low carb diet! The recipe seems pretty forgiving if you want to sub in a different fish (like leftover salmon), add breadcrumbs instead of oatmeal (or half of each), vary the seasonings or replace the green onions with parsley or cilantro. I’m going to add it to my rotation now and eat more tuna! I haven’t tried yet but it seems like it might also freeze well for when you are really short on time!

These were great! I used two tablespoons of BBQ sauce and it was definitely enough.

We’ve been trying to have fish at least once a week… and like the others have said, my go to is either tuna noodle casserole or salmon. I made this and the flavor was good

I didn’t make any substitutions. I thought they were ok and my boyfriend really liked them. Definitely a good recipe for using up that can of tuna in the back of your pantry. We made a mayo and hot sauce mixture to dip them in.

it was great. different taste but delicious. it does not taste tuna

Wow, I was not expecting this to taste so good. My husband doesn’t like canned tuna but really enjoyed these patties. I had to substitute bbq sauce(didn’t have any) for sriracha chilli sauce ( it’s got heat and is sweet) I cooked them using coconut oil which gave them a lovely flavour ???? Thanks for the recipe, I will definitely make these again.

Made these as a quick supper for myself. No savory, and I added about a tablespoon each of Tony Chachere’s and garlic powder. They were very good and I’ll definitely make them again! Next time I will add another egg white to help them keep their shape, mine were very crumbly. I think I’ll also lower the heat and cook them a bit longer. They were very quick- less than thirty minutes in all.

This is SO good. Hot sauce is essential! Turns out better if you use foil-packed tuna, but it’s also more expensive. Kids love it, so does dad!
Gregory Freeman
Mine was a little different, but good consistency. Thank you!

I used tuna packed in water, as that is what I had on hand. Patties were a little dry, But I’ll try with tuna in oil next time.

These were really good! I doubled the recipe and I had no problems at all with mine sticking together well and forming perfect patties. I was able to shape mine by hand and they held together very nicely and cooked up great. The only thing I left out was the savory because I had none. Next time I might add a touch more bbq sauce, but it was also tasty to just dip them in a touch of extra sauce on the side. Very happy with these. They really cut down on the strong tuna flavor. Thank you so much for the recipe. It will certainly be going into our rotation!

Definitely something different and really good! I have made it for my lunch and ended up with enough for two lunches! If you like tuna and just want a little variety in your life give this one a try!
Brian Garrett
My kids gobble this up like there is no tomorrow!! And they won’t eat tuna otherwise! I am definitely pleased with this recipe. I almost never have green onions so I don’t ever add them. Might not sound appealing just reading it- but you will be pleasantly surprised!

I just made these for me and my daughter, trying to come up with new lunches. I will definitely be making these again, they are awesome!!! I had to use white onion instead of green onion, and it was still fantastic. I have also been trying to incorporate turmeric into our diet so I used that instead of savory salt, and it is delicious. Very happy I found this recipe, thanks for sharing!

I was shocked at how good this was! Instead of oats, I used Panko bread crumbs. Also, I made a sauce to put on top which consisted of mayo (Miracle Whip), hot sauce, and pepper. It was delicious! It will definitely be something I’ll make again.

Oh my goodness! This was so delicious, I couldn’t believe it! At first, when I read the title I thought that it sounded strange. But then I read some of the positive reviews this dish received and was intrigued so I decided to make it. It is a delectable combination of tuna, oats, barbeque sauce, green onion, and other seasonings. They are then pan fried into patties. If you decide to make this, don’t be afraid of getting it a golden brown on each side to add a slight crisp. Cilantro pairs perfectly with this dish. I will be making this again.
