Fresh Cranberry Sauce

For your Thanksgiving meal, you really must serve fresh cranberry sauce. This simple, 3-ingredient cranberry sauce pairs well with turkey, but it also tastes great on bagels, cornbread, cheesecake, and as a filling for cranberry and cream cheese tarts.

Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 20 mins
Servings: 16

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup water
  2. 1 cup white sugar
  3. 1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries (such as Ocean Spray®)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients.

  3. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan; add sugar and cook until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.

  5. Stir cranberries into the saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer until cranberries have popped and sauce is chunky, about 10 minutes or longer for desired consistency. The longer you cook it, the less chunky it will be.

  8. Pour sauce into a serving dish or jars and cover until ready to use; the pectin in the cranberries will make the cranberry sauce gel as it cools.

  10. Mix cranberry sauce with a fork before serving.
  11. If you like a sweeter cranberry sauce, you can use up to 2 cups white sugar in this recipe. I prefer a tart sauce so I only use 1 cup.

thank you for all the step by step pictures. It was easy to make and turned out well.

I used about 1 1/2 c of sugar, and did it the night before Thanksgiving, so it had plenty of time to cool and settle. It was wonderful. I’m the only one in my family who eats it (and none of them eat the canned stuff, either), but that was fine. More for me!

I just added some lemon zest and fresh lemon juice, kick-butt results! Simply delicious!

I love this recipe, and have used it for years, I am diabetic so I use Splenda instead of sugar. I don’t add anything else to it, I make it the day ahead, so it is ready to go when I need it.

I had to actually ask for allrecipes cranberry relish recipe in order to find this one usually it just pops right up but, this time I had to search for it. I knew what it was but, I just like to make sure that I’m doing it correctly every time I have to check it. I just love this recipe.

I’ve always made it this way, for decades. I add a good shot of Grand Marnier to mine after it cools a bit.

I added 2 oranges to this, cut up into small cubes. I don’t eat it, but my husband loved it. Since whole berry cranberry sauce doesn’t seem to be available in our area lately, it is a good thing it is so easy to make!

I made it as directed. I felt it was too sweet. I used orange juice. Next time I will use 1/2 the amount of sugar. My wife added mandarin oranges and chopped walnuts.

This was so easy and turned out great! I added a little bit of real Maple syrup and also a couple of TJs candied orange slices (removed the rind at the end). So delicious will make this again! And I may have to because it may not make it to Thanksgiving!!

I have used this recipe a few times the last couple of years. It is my “go to” recipe for cranberry sauce. It is so simple, I don’t know why anyone would buy cranberry sauce from a can. I occasionally add some cinnamon. Either way, it turns out great!!!!
Patricia Mason
Easy. I used orange juice instead of water and added some cinnamon.

Variations to this recipe can easily be done by substituting for the water with: pineapple juice; pomegranate juice, etc.

Great and simple recipe. Two suggestions: 1. Rinse the cranberries before adding to the sugar water. 2. I usually make the night before if possible. Gives plenty of time to completely cool and thicken prior to serving.

I used half white and half brown sugar. I also used the zest of one orange. Rather than waste the orange juice, I added the juice of the orange and water to make 1 cup. Delicious!

Easy to make and delicious! I did use orange juice instead of water. I was pleasantly surprised.
