This is a simple recipe well thought out. Less is really more. I am on the third batch in two days. I love my smoker and i bbq almost every day. The charcoal company love’s me. Try it as is . It wont disappoint, but i’m sure there’s someone out there that wont like it.
I make larger batches using a full jar of horseradish as the base. Instead of the ACV and mustard powder, I use regular yellow mustard. The interesting thing about this sauce is that it works as spicy cocktail sauce for shrimp, but when it cooked in the oven on on the grill the heat mostly disappears and its just a sweet BBQ sauce.
It’s quite good as is but the beauty of this is that it’s so easy to adjust to taste. Little warmer – a little cayenne, too sweet – reduce the sugar. Whatever you end up with comes from this.
Why go to the store and get BBQ sauce when you can make it from scratch? Loved this base recipe. I didn’t have mustard or horseradish so I left it out, however I DID use cocktail sauce instead and added a generous helping of Frank’s Hot Sauce for a little kick and it was delicious! Thank you for helping me out in a pinch!
I ran out of what I normally use so I went searching and found this recipe…… made it …..is delicious
It was a bit sweet so I added one good teaspoon of minced garlic and that took it over the top. My husband loved it. I will be making this again.
Very good. I cooked in the microwave for two minuets to meld the flavors.
Great sauce! Especially when you are in a pinch!
I am sure I will make it often!
I make this several times each summer, absolutely love it!
This is the first time I have rated a recipe. I had slow cooker chicken left over and decided to make pulled chicken. I tried this recipe and am glad I did. It was excellent!!!. Next time I will double the recipe. Thanks Teri.- OliveOyl
This is my family’s favorite BBQ sauce. We made it the first time only because it was the only recipe on allrecipes that we had all the ingredients on hand. Turned out fantastic! Follow recipe as written and have used on beef/pork ribs, chicken and anything we need BBQ sauce for. Thanks for a great simple recipe that ended up being the BEST!
I made this, but did not use all the ingredients and now i never buy bbq sauce i make this!!
Excellent! Had put a rub on the chicken and realized I didn’t have any bbq sauce. Found this and the chicken came out beautifully.
Made as is. A bit too sweet perhaps but good if that’s what you’re after.
I use this when I’m in a pinch, but I tweak the heck out of it. I give it 3 stars only because I use it as a base. I go light on the brown sugar because it gets way to sweet. I up the horseradish by a 1/2 tsp, also add a squirt or two of prepared yellow mustard to taste. 1/2 tsp of ground onion. Works great with the the BBQ Beef Cup recipe.
little sweet, will cut back sugar next time
I made this one day when I ran out of pre-made store bought BBQ sauce. It’s tasty and pretty similar to the store bought stuff, but if I was to make this again I would probably use about half the sugar listed in the recipe. It is too sweet for my taste. I also didn’t have the cider vinegar so I left that out and it was still good.
I LOVE this sauce!!!!! Me and my family have used this BBQ sauce frequently for years and it’s a fantastic family favorite!!! #Love it!!!
Teri, Thanks for this recipe. I needed a base to start from as I knew some of the main ingredients I wanted to use, but needed a kick start, so I ended up omitting the brown sugar and used Agave instead for the sweetner, added a little sweet chili sauce, oyster sauce, chili pepper flakes and no horseraddish (i didn’t have any on hand). It turned out awesome!! Great reviews
Great start..I added 1 tsp of franks red hot sauce and 4 drops of ghost 357. The original recipe I increased the base incredients by .5!
