  4.8 – 0 reviews  • BBQ Sauce Recipes

This was in the cookbook that I received from my mother.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 48
Yield: 6 cups

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups ketchup
  2. 2 cups tomato sauce
  3. 1 ¼ cups brown sugar
  4. 1 ¼ cups red wine vinegar
  5. ½ cup unsulfured molasses
  6. 2 tablespoons butter
  7. 4 teaspoons hickory-flavored liquid smoke
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  10. 1 teaspoon paprika
  11. ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  12. ½ teaspoon onion powder
  13. ½ teaspoon celery seed
  14. ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  15. ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  16. ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix together ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, wine vinegar, molasses, butter, and liquid smoke in a large saucepan over medium heat. Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, celery seed, cayenne, chili powder, and cinnamon.
  2. Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to 20 minutes. For a thicker sauce, simmer longer, and for thinner, less time is needed. Sauce can also be thinned using a bit of water if necessary.
  3. Brush the sauce onto any kind of meat during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

No adjustments! It’s the only sauce my wife will let me make now. Been using this recipe for about 3 years now. I cut it in half though. Too much for just the two of us.

I use organic ketchup, this is the best you’ll find.

This is my go to recipe. I love it! I have made it several times. I didn’t have molasses this time so I just cooked it for add’l 1/2.hour. Still turned out great.

Finally a KC BBQ sauce recipe that doesn’t call for corn syrup! Sweet, Smokey, silky, sticky….I think I am in love. Trying it on slow cooker beef short ribs today!

I no longer buy BBQ sauce, my family and friends love it and ask for it all the time.

Excellent! Made it as per the recipe, but it makes a lot. How long can you keep this in the refrigerator? Can you preserve it using a boiling-water canner?

Fantastic!! I am so grateful I found this recipe. Didn’t change a thing. Doubled the recipe, and I’m glad I did. Your sauce is amazing and I’m so glad you shared it with us. Highly recommend the sauce. Thank you.

Tastes amazing! Comparable to Wyandotte BBQ

I’ve been making this for years. Jar sauces just don’t compare. I always add a spice depending on the feel. So Good!

Made this for Superbowl without a few ingredients. I did not have the liquid smoke, red wine vinegar, or cayenne pepper, but it was delicious for me! Will definitely make this again without the three ingredients mentioned.

This sauce was amazing! It is sweet and tangy with just the right amount of heat.

Loved this sauce, as did my family. I put a bit aside and added a bit of lime juice to it, adds a bit of a south western taste. So good!

Excellent BBQ suace. The whole family really liked it. Smoked some baby back ribs. Excellent combination.

One of my favorite sauces to make; almost as good as my brisket sauce!

I have made this barbeque sauce 3-4 times a year for approximately four years. Always make a double batch and anything I have put it on ramps the flavour up to another level. Like any amazing recipe, I have shared it with multiple friends and they all continue to rave about it and the ones that don’t make their own continue to ask for refills lol to which I am more than willing to accommodate. Honestly the only changes I have made to the recipe is to double the tomato sauce and I use Demerara brown sugar Instead of regular. I prefer a thicker sauce so I simmer it anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes.

Favorite sauce so far. Great with ribs or brisket.

I have been making this bbq sauce for years now. Have not bought store bought or restaurant-made sauce since. Absolutely no need to as Big Al’s K.C. Bar-B-Q Sauce far exceeds any on the market (in my humble opinion!). This recipe, followed as outlined, will make two large mason jars worth!!

Great as written. I added 1/2 t. Ancho Chile Powder & 2 T. Worchestershire, and it sent it over the top for us. Definitely needs some simmer-time to thicken: about 30 min. for me. Thanks! Awesome recipe!

Enjoyed very much. Excellent on everything. Ended up having to make a few gallons. Adult children wanted some so I canned 36 pints.
