Tami’s Red Sauce: Bolognese Tomato Sauce with Ground Beef

  4.6 – 36 reviews  • Tomato

You can make this Bolognese spaghetti sauce with fresh or dried herbs that you probably already have in your cupboard, and it comes together quickly and easily.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr 5 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 15 mins
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. 2 (29 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  3. 3 tablespoons dried basil
  4. 3 tablespoons dried oregano
  5. 3 tablespoons onion powder
  6. 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  7. 2 tablespoons white sugar
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned completely, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease.
  2. Stir tomato sauce, basil, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, sugar, salt, and pepper into beef. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and cook sauce at a simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick and rich, about 1 hour.
  3. Fresh herbs really add an extra layer of flavor. If I have any of the ingredients fresh, I substitute: 1 cup basil, chopped; 1 cup oregano, chopped, 2 onions, finely chopped; or 3 cloves garlic, minced.
  4. This makes enough sauce for 2 boxes of pasta; it freezes well.

Really delicious and easy! Couple edits I made: 1 can of tomato sauce and 1 can diced tomatoes instead of 2 cans is sauce. 1/2 cup Cabernet Sauvignon, fresh porcini mushrooms.

Easy and hearty meal for family. Will make again.

I’m sure I failed to make this properly, based on some of the reviews posted. Hmm, instead of tomato sauce, I guess I should have used a mishmash of ketchup, tomato paste and canned diced tomatoes. Instead of the ground beef, maybe I should have used a mix of ground turkey and texturized vegetable protein. Instead of following any of the instructions I reckon I should have…..well, you get my point. Add my name to the list of cooks asking folks to either evaluate the recipe as written OR post your own fershlugginer recipe! This is the second time I’ve made it, slavishly following the recipe as presented and guess what? It’s terrific just as written! Easy to make, smells and tastes wonderful, and everyone loves it!

Beautiful tasting sauce. Will definitely be making this again. My boyfriend loved it and normally he is not a bolognese fan. Very happy I tried this sauce.

I made this but added two broken up smoked Johnsonville brats and let it simmer on low for 2hr. The smoky undertone of flavor was awesome. Also added some red pepper flakes for a extra kick. Thanks

Made this sauce tonight. It is wonderful and the family loved it! I used crushed tomatoes instead of tomato sauce. This is a keeper!

Very easy and delicious. I added one onion that I sauteed then added beef and three Italian sausages. Also one small can of Italian diced tomatoes went in with some chopped mushrooms. I added I T of Italian blend seasoning, and 1t of cayenne pepper, and 1/2 c dry red wine and simmered all for 1 hour. We like a little heat in our sauce, use less cayenne, just a dash, will be good.

Everyone loved it! I added mushrooms and some frozen corn. It was yummy we didn’t even have it over noodles, we ate it as a tomato stew!!!

This is a very easy recipe to follow. I used fresh basil. ( a bunch since we love basil and fresh garlic) came out wonderful!

Great flavor, first time I made it so I followed the recipe exactly. It was a bit watery and I lit it simmer for over a couple of hours. Maybe 1 tomato paste instead of all the sauce. Will make again for sure.

Love tomato sauces. These ones are good.

I did it and made a lot. On the next times I used it, I added red wine and it goes great.
