Total: 25 min
Prep: 10 min
Cook: 15 min
Yield: 4 to 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  2. 2 medium yellow onions, peeled, grated
  3. 5 cloves garlic, peeled, halved and cut into thin slices
  4. Kosher salt
  5. Freshly ground white pepper
  6. 4 Roma tomatoes, cored, halved and diced
  7. 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  8. 1 teaspoon dry oregano
  9. 1 (20-ounce) can whole tomatoes
  10. 1/2 cup basil leaves, stemmed and washed
  11. 5 small NY strip steaks, bone-in, if desired

Instructions

  1. My mother used to make this sauce and throw browned pork chops in for a few minutes and serve them swimming in the sauce. I love, as well, to add a steak or two for extra fun!
  2. In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic slices and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook for about 2 minutes then add the fresh tomato, sugar and oregano. Stir to blend and add the canned tomatoes. Cook for an additional few minutes over high heat, stirring from time to time. Taste for seasoning, add the basil leaves.
  3. After the sauce has finished cooking, cook the steaks using your preferred method. Add the steaks to the hot sauce and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes before serving.

I had left over spaghetti sauce and meatballs but not enough for a decent serving. So I supplemented with this recipe and it was great!! I smashed the tomatoes to combine with the leftover sauce and added a little Parmesan cheese as I usually do. Very fresh! I can’t wait to try the recipe as-is!

I made this recipe and it turned out “GREAT!!!” I made the sauce early today so it could sit and collect its flavors. I left for a few hours and then returned home to make dinner… I used Rib Eye steaks instead of NY because I couldn’t find NY at our local store… I seasoned the steaks as well and let them sit in the refer… I cooked them for about 2-3 min on each side and then did what the recipe said and the Dish turned out OUTSTANDING… I definitely will make this again and again… Especially the Sauce… And recommend it to friends. It will be on the Menu for when company is over…. Thank You Alex for the Great Recipe…

I also made extra easy sauce and keep in freezerthis sauce with in freezer bags…1 cup each. So useful for last minute foods. The use of this sauce on pieces of meat is great. If you are reading this opinion, try the recipe one time and be your own judge. Enjoy!

We loved this so much that I made a big batch to freeze and it comes in so handy. Goes with everything and takes things from boring to exciting. Beside that it is very light.

Thank you so much Alex for this great simplicity! The combination of fresh and canned really gives you the flavor that exceeds using either one alone. The shaved onions and garlic, combine flavor that just doesn’t some with diced onions. Also, just using basil leaves and not dicing it, gives flavor and allows you to take out the basil for those that do not like it. Thank you so much ! I am a fantastic cook and have a cafe and experienced lodge cooking for 40 years….listen to me everyone!! if you haven’t cooked before …or are looking for new recipes, ….this woman just made your life a lot fresher. Alex, thank you again. Sharon Patton, Los Banos, CA

I made this dinner last night and it was excellent. Easy recipe. I would give more time for the garlic to soften up a little while cooking with the onions. I followed the recipe as printed. I did deglazed my pan after cooking my steaks with some Merlot( let it reduce) and added it to the sauce and steaks. Awesome !! Thanks Alex!

The steak was perfection in this sauce. Sauce is great over pasta.

Got this recipe the first time I watched Alex’s show. The recipe is excellent and easy. What a better combo for a recipe? I was leary given its name and all having tried recipes (not that of Alex’s) that were ‘fifteen minute’ this and ‘twenty minute’ that, which turned out to be a mis-use of ingredients and terrible. Not this one. Highly recommended. No one in your home will know it was so easy. Btw, I have tried it now both ways — with strip steak and with pork chops. Both were wonderful and eveyone asked repeatedly for the recipe to be prepared again.
