Spiced Apple-Pear Sauce

The natural sweetness of fresh apples and pears makes this homemade sauce a standout over the store-bought version. Lemon juice adds brightness and keeps the fruit from browning, and cinnamon and nutmeg lend warm spice notes.

Ingredients

  1. 3 McIntosh apples, peeled, cored and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
  2. 3 ripe Bartlett pears, peeled, cored and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
  3. 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  4. 6 cinnamon sticks
  5. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  6. 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the apples, pears, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1/4 cup water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cover, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook until the apples and pears are very soft but still a bit chunky, 15 to 20 minutes. Taste the mixture and add the remaining tablespoon of sugar if desired.
  2. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir a few times until the sauce is well combined with small chunks. Cool to room temperature. Remove the cinnamon sticks and serve. (For a smoother sauce, remove from heat, remove the cinnamon sticks and then whisk the mixture until smooth before cooling.)

My husband’s favorite. Have fun switching different kinds of apples with different kinds of pears. I try to keep in refrigerator most of the time, nice when I want that extra dish because the table looks like it needs more.

So easy! The house smells amazing. I used just one tablespoon of sugar and added 1/4 teaspoon of allspice, since I didn’t have ground nutmeg. Taste delicious!

Delicious! Used two cinnamon sticks and a smidge of pumpkin pie spice (what I had) … very good. Juicy pears, and both pears and apples were sweet. Did not need much water OR sugar. Quick and easy. Great recipe to use the extra ripe fruit in the refrigerator and the kitchen smelled wonderful on a cold and rainy morning.

Very easy and good tasting but way too much cinnamon. Next time I would only use 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks.
