Ingredients
- 1 (16 ounce) bag coleslaw mix
- 2 tablespoons diced onion
- ⅔ cup creamy salad dressing (such as Miracle Whip™)
- ½ cup white sugar
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- ½ teaspoon poppy seeds
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Combine coleslaw mix and onion in a large bowl.
- Whisk salad dressing, sugar, vegetable oil, vinegar, poppy seeds, and salt together in a medium bowl until blended. Pour dressing over coleslaw mixture and toss to coat.
- Chill for at least 2 hours before serving.

Loved it and followed recipe! No changes! I’ve made this favorite many times! No need to buy store bought coleslaw dressing anymore
I used half the sugar and it was still pretty sweet. Substituted celery seed for the poppy seed, much improved. A twist of lemon just before serving brightened it up quite a bit. I didn’t add the oil at all. Not necessary. Will make again, but maybe a little less sugar and will definitely keep the other changes.
Been making this recipe for years. It’s the ONLY cream-style coleslaw I will eat as I prefer vinegar coleslaw.
I USED MAYO AND LEFT OUT THE ONIONS — JUST THE WAY I LIKED IT – I ALSO PUT THE SLAW INTO THE BOWL WITH THE DRESSING MIX
I don’t have miracle whip so I use Mayo. Also I stock white wine vinegar. We thought it was good. Mayo is not sweet so the white wine vinegar off set that.
The dressing recipe , for us is good for much more slaw; 1-1/2 lbs cabbage plus julienned carrots. we also cut the sugar back , use just 2 tbl of EVO , and add some “tang” by doubling the vinegar. We have a type 2 diabetic in the family and this recipe works well with splenda. for both the sugar or splenda , mix your dressing with half the sweetener you anticipate. sample and add more to taste, before adding it to the slaw.
No changes, perfect as written. Everyone always requests it. It’s the only cole slaw my family will eat now!
Finally! A Cole slaw recipe that I love. I have been trying various recipes over the years, but could not find one I liked. This one tasted great even before I chilled it. I’m glad I read the past reviews: 1/2 cup of sugar would be waaay too sweet for me. I used only a 1/4 c. Easy recipe. Will definitely have a lot.

I have now made this several times and each time it turned out great! I used celery seed in lieu of poppy seed, also added ground white pepper, ground mustard and cayenne pepper … the BOMB !!!
As is less the oil and with half the sugar… Yummm. I could even have done with less sugar than that, but let’s not split hairs. Chilling of the slaw should NOT be skipped.
I have made this serval time to serve with fish. I followed the recipe, and it turned out delicious each time. This recipe has become part of my “go to” menus for sure.

Hubby said “best slaw EVER”…I took some of the suggestions and made half the amount of dressing to the whole amount of slaw mix so it wouldn’t be so sloppy wet. Perfect for use on bbq sandwiches or stand alone. Used celery seed vs poppy and it was great. Thank you!
This was absolutely delicious! I couldn’t find a 16 oz bag of slaw so I added a little more red cabbage, red onion (that’s what we like), crushed pepper, & a tad more carrots (we aren’t big carrot fans). Sent for 4 hours & was delicious!
Loved this and will make it again and again!
