Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons butter
  2. 1 onion, chopped
  3. ½ green bell pepper, chopped
  4. 12 ounces imitation crabmeat
  5. 1 cup mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Heat butter in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté onion and green pepper in hot butter until vegetables are tender, about 3 minutes. Stir in crabmeat; saute for 3 minutes more.
  2. Transfer crabmeat mixture to a medium bowl. Stir in mayonnaise until well combined. Serve warm or cold.

This was wonderful! Here are a few tips based on what worked well for me. First, my store had 16 oz packages of imitation crabmeat (instead of 12 oz) so I used that amount instead. It worked really well with the other ingredient quantities as written (so this might help for folks that thought it was too much mayo). Second, I allowed the crab and veggie mixture to cool to room temp before adding the mayo (which may help with the oiliness another review mentioned, as mixing it when cooled kept the mayo in creamy form). Finally, because I almost always season to taste, I added a sprinkle of Old Bay (per other reviewers’ recommendations) and a sprinkle of garlic salt. This would be delicious on its own as a side or in a crab salad sandwich, but we served it on top of avocado, which was SO good.

It’s was delicious but I made a few minor changes…I used Miracle Whip because I don’t like mayonnaise. I also added a few elbows and served it cold. I also added some seafood seasoning, black pepper for color and a little garlic power, onion powder and Lawry’s seasoned salt.

Good basic recipe! Will make this again. I used 1T olive oil to sautee, no butter. Also, used red and yellow mini peppers instead of green. Used 8 oz imitation crab and only about 1/2c mayo.

Thanks for this excellent recipe! It offers many possibilities for creative additions and changes. I used red sweet peppers instead of the green because it was all I had; and added frozen sweet peas, as well as a little sour cream. It was simply amazing.

I doubled this crab salad recipe and glad I did. We loved it and it made a great side dish for our Independence Day cookout. We first discovered crab salad at Sizzler many years ago in the early days of our marriage. This is the closest I’ve come to a recipe that duplicates that recipe. If you love the taste of imitation crab–as we do–you will love this recipe, because the crab is the star. There’s plenty of crab and not so much of anything thing else, like celery. Yes, you could add a little celery for crunch, but this is just perfect as it is. But wait, there’s more. With plenty of leftover crab salad tonight, I had this itch in my brain that needed to be scratched, a distant memory of the seafood and crab sandwich that Subway used to have. So I buttered a couple of hot dog buns, browned them in a skillet on the stove top, and devoured two crab salad sandwiches. The buttery crunch of the hot dog buns, the other worldly crab salad, and the contrast between the two, made for an unforgettable culinary experience. Made it and loved it! Didn’t use bell pepper, but did use finely diced celery. Only 1/2 an onion, but added green onions when mixing in the mayo. LOVED IT!!!!!!

I added 1 T. Sriracha, changed the plain butter to 2 T. Butter and 1 T. Garlic & Herb Butter, substituted the green pepper with tri-colored peppers, doubled the amount of crab, 1/2 t. Old Bay Garlic & Herb, and added 1/4 Cup 5 cheese Italian blend then baked at 350 for 25 minutes. Such rave reviews.
