Ingredients

 1. 1 1/2 pounds red-skinned potatoes, pierced with a fork
 2. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
 3. 3/4 to 1 cup milk
 4. Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
 5. 1/2 medium onion, sliced
 6. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
 7. 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
 8. 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
 9. 4 thick slices sourdough bread
 10. 3 tablespoons dijon mustard
 11. 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
 12. 3/4 pound sliced roast beef
 13. 1/2 bunch watercress, woody stems removed
 14. 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

 1. Microwave the potatoes on high until soft, about 20 minutes. Using a fork, mash the potatoes in a bowl with 2 tablespoons butter. Add the milk and mash; season with salt and pepper. Preheat the broiler.
 2. Meanwhile, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over high heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 4 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook until slightly brown. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth until smooth. Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce and simmer until thick, about 3 minutes.
 3. Toast the bread under the broiler, about 1 minute. Spread the mustard and horseradish on toasts; place each on a plate. Pour some gravy over the toast; top with the roast beef, more gravy, watercress and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the sandwiches with the potatoes.

This definitely fell short for us. After trying this we all agreed it doesn’t compete with a roast beef from scratch, home made gravy. If you want real flavor- take the time to prepare a roast.

This is NOT a classic AMERICAN Hot Roast Beef Open Face Sandwich!
Only Four ingredients needed:
Savory Sliced Roast Beef
Dark Thick Beef Gravy ( made from beef stock and Pkg of Instant Beef Gravy Mix )
Two thick slices of hearty bread
Mashed Potatoes (any variety)

Salt and pepper if needed

That’s the way I always had it in the 1950s and early 1960s. No fancy or over doctored or flavor enhanced! It’s supposed to easy to make from leftovers and pleasing to all ages! Even the toddler’s like it.

We cut our sandwiches and half and put the potatoes in between the two halves and put gravy on all of it delish

Who can resist a hot, open-face, roast beef sandwich? But this recipe fell short in two major ways: (1) Why would anyone in his right mind use chicken stock to make beef gravy?! (2) IMO, it’s senseless to include a mashed potato recipe with the sandwich recipe. Folks who like that pairing already have one or more preferred methods for mash (or can look one up) … and those other folks who prefer a different side with the sandwich can/should sub it right on in there. (I’m a sucker for haricots verts and frequently sub them in for potatoes or egg noodles.)

My very picky brother-in-law had seconds (sans the watercress. Only reason I didn’t give this one five stars is because we all agreed the roast beef should be heated up or cooked in with the gravy. Other than that, quite delicious.

been here tried this. it was a decent thing but it was so uninteresting I was nearly put to sleep. gave away all my extras rather than have it for lunch.

This was delicious and easy to make. I have 4 boys, so I stretched it a little more and eyed the measurements I did add a little beef base to the gravy for color but it was yummy without. I also used sliced roast beef from the deli and added it in in the last 2 minutes before serving to heat it through. From my 4 year old to my husband, it was a hit they’ve already asked me to make it again!

This recipe was so quick and easy, perfect for a weeknight after work. I struggled a little to make the gravy, but other than that it was a breeze. My husband loved it and can’t wait to have it again.

This recipe is so easy to make and is really delicious. We’re not hoarseradish or mustard fans, so we omitted those 2 ingredients. Also, I added some minced garlic to the sauce. I’ve made this twice already, and each time my husband has 2 hearty servings – he LOVES it!!!
