Shipwreck Casserole

  4.4 – 178 reviews  • Pasta

This shipwreck casserole is a delightful, kid-friendly dinner that is perfect for a busy night. The preparation time is typically only as long as the speed of your can opener and the difficulty of removing the meat’s packaging. The fact that it’s a full one-pot meal is a huge perk!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound lean ground beef
  2. 1 (7.25 ounce) package macaroni and cheese mix
  3. 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  4. 1 cup milk
  5. 1 cup frozen peas
  6. 1 cup frozen corn
  7. 1 teaspoon seasoned salt or to taste
  8. 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Stir pasta and cheese mixture from macaroni and cheese package into beef. Stir in tomatoes, milk, peas, and corn; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until noodles are tender, about 12 minutes.
  3. Season with seasoned salt. Stir 1/2 of the Cheddar cheese into dish to melt. Top with remaining cheese.
  4. fabeveryday
  5. For variety you could add Rotel instead of plain tomatoes and use one cup of frozen prepared fajita veggies and some taco seasoning to make a “Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck.” Italian seasoning, garlic, onions, and mozzarella would make it a “Sicilian Shipwreck.” You get the idea: the combinations are pretty well unlimited.
  6. Although the recipe calls for frozen vegetables and uncooked ground meat, leftovers work just as well.
  7. Use Creole-style seasoned salt if you like a bit of spice in your easy dinners.

This was really tasty! After reading the reviews I decided to add some additional seasonings while it cooked (garlic and onion powder along with the seasoning salt), and I kind of winged the amount of milk to make sure I had enough liquid. I recommend stirring every couple minutes to make sure you have enough liquid and that the noodles don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. I also used canned corn and peas for convenience and it worked out well. Everyone loved it, and it was so easy!

This is the easiest most delicious dinner. I always make it the way the recipe intended and haven’t felt the need to change it. It’s great for when you’re in a hurry.

I made this twice. The first time there was not enough liquid and I burned it. The 2nd time I added more liquid and it came out perfect. It is an affordable easy meal to make. The only complaint I have is the peas, corn, and tomatoes make it taste too sweet for me. Maybe next time I’ll throw in a little more spice, and add some onions and beef broth. It reminds me of hamburger helper, but with a little less preservatives and additives. It seems a little high in carbs, sodium, and calories. It by far isn’t the healthiest meal to cook, but it isn’t the worst. If it didn’t taste so sweet I would give it a 5.

Really enjoyed this recipe, easy and delicious comfort food!

Tasty and easy. I substituted ca Ned corn, didn’t have any frozen. I also used a bag of frozen stir fry veggies that had been languishing in my freezer for a few months. My son, who will tell you if he doesn’t like something said “it’s actually really good”

Too high in fat, carbs and calories However it’s so easy and affordable. I can make it every once in a while several different ways so that makes it perfect!

This is goulash

Easy peasy. Did a double batch and it was a hit. Might try with hot Italian sausage and different spices next time.

This is absolutely delicious. I was going to try it with the Velveeta Mac and cheese but didn’t want to deviate the first time. I’m definitely using it next time. I thought it tasted better before I added the cheese. I do not like to cook and if it has too many steps or ingredients I don’t go near it. This didn’t take long to make and was super easy. The kid didn’t like it though. Too bad, more for me. YUMMY!

I cooked ground chicken with onions and garlic, added season salt and pepper, added the canned tomatoes, salt and pepper to those and put in bottom of baking dish. I cooked the mac and cheese separate and put on top of the chicken. Then added shredded cheese (Italian and Fiesta blend), cooked in oven at 425 for 15 minutes and it was delicious. For those who say it’s bland, season your meat and either buy seasoned tomatoes or season those as well. This was delicious and my kids loved it!

Tastes just like it looks…. an amorphous bowl of glop. There are fine recipes of all kinds here, don’t waste your time and ingredients on this one….sheesh. This isn’t cooking (it’s what your six year old does with the leftovers…..then gives to his little brother when you’re not looking… just sayin’) Well named though…

Read the “TIPS” and made four different ‘Shipwreck Casseroles”. It was a lot of fun just cooking and adding ingredients that my family likes. This is easy and anyone even my 10yr old can make it.

I’ve made this for years! I’ve always heard it called “goulash” instead of a casserole, though. Instead of frozen vegetables, I’ve always used either regular corn, or for the most flavor, a can of southwest corn. I also use a can of tomato sauce instead of Rotel, because it just does something with the flavor. I also saw other reviews mentioning the lack of flavor- add a stick of butter once you get everything together and I promise it makes all the difference! Top it with shredded cheese and you’ll have a family favorite.

I changed the recipe a bit. Instead of peas & corn, I microwaved some bits of cut up broccoli and baby carrots. Instead of hamburger I cut up 4 beef hotlinks. Delicious!

First of all thank you to the reviewer who did not try the recipe. I’m sure there are so many who wanted to be the first to not try it and review it but you beat them to it. Thanks for wasting our time. I made this recipe. I didn’t make many changes. I didn’t have corn so couldn’t add that but added green pepper and onion. I also substituted ground turkey for ground beef. Once all semi cooked and stirred around I stuck it in the oven so I didn’t have to watch over it and keep stirring. We thought it was delish. No it’s not what you call a “clean eating” recipe but I didn’t read where it said it was. Maybe the person who didn’t try it also read it in the invisible description. We used to make shipwreck with eggs and bacon etc when we went camping. Now I have 2 shipwreck recipes. Great recipe for busy moms with after school activities.

Did not try it, and will not try it. Recipes like this diminish your credibility.

Mac and cheese from a box??? REALLY!!! GARBAGE FOOD!

This was awful. I spent my lunch break making It and there is no flavor and it’s basically like throwing everything but the kitchen sink in here to make a dish. FYI a casserole is baked. This was the worst version of a chicken bog Recipe I’ve ever had. Do not waste time On this.

It sounded really good, but in practice, not so good. There wasn’t enough liquid in the recipe to actually cook the pasta. As my husband stated, I have other recipes for essentially the same thing that work much better.

Cooked according to recipe…found it keep sticking to skillet burning on bottom..transferto baking dish tight foil on top at 350 for15 mins to get it done
