Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 5 pounds boneless pork butt or shoulder
- One 8-ounce can crushed pineapple
- 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- Hawaiian buns, for serving
- 4 cups thinly shredded savoy cabbage
- 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon celery seeds
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- For the Hawaiian pulled pork: In a small bowl, mix the onion powder, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Rub the mixture on all sides of the pork. Put the pork in a slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours.
- Shred the pork with 2 forks, removing any large pieces of fat. Pour the broth into a fat separator or skim off the fat. In a bowl, whisk 2 cups of the skimmed broth with the crushed pineapple, hoisin, honey, soy sauce and vinegar. Put the pork back in the slow cooker and stir in the sauce. Cook on low for 1 hour.
- For the slaw: Meanwhile, combine the cabbage, rice vinegar, sugar, celery seeds and some salt and pepper in a bowl and toss to coat. Let stand, tossing frequently, until the cabbage wilts, about 20 minutes.
- Serve the pulled pork on Hawaiian buns topped with slaw.

Very good as written
The rub for the pork was awesome. Cooked it like instructed and it was extremely tender. The sauce was not the best. I left the meat plain an had my husband try sauce an he did like it. I thought it was ok. Next time I will make another sauce not this one. I will be making more of that rub to use on other meats.
Loved this dry rub. Cooked Boston Pork Butt in crockpot on low for 7 hours and 1 hour on high. Pork was very tender and pulled apart easily. Wish I had used the sauce as a dipping sauce instead of mixing it in with the pork. The sauce was too overwhelming for my taste.
The pork turned out fine, but the rest of it was not appealing to us. I was excited, as I like Hawaiian pork sandwiches, but the sauce, while not bland, was just blaughhhh and I wouldn’t recommend it on anything. We didn’t care for the slaw either. Overall, a big disappointment.
I made this for a group of friends who thought it was fabulous. So easy!
I made this for my boyfriend, who is an extremely picky eater, and he loved it and I loved it because I am not a fan of barbecue sauce and this didn’t taste anything like barbecue, which was good. The only things I did differently is I doubled the dry rub ingredients and I also added 1 tablespoon of cumin to the dry rub. This recipe is a keeper and I will definitely make this again.
Hi! I made this last night and everyone enjoyed. It was the easiest and most perfect pork butt I’ve ever done in the slower cooker. Ironic that the time I didn’t add any liquid was the time it didn’t dry out at all. I didn’t, though, have time to return it to the pot with the sauce for extra simmering. Instead, while shredding the pork, I boiled all of the sauce ingredients on the stovetop. The reduction thickened slightly and concentrated the flavors. I, then, tossed it with the meat. Only four stars because the sauce was still just a bit flat in flavor – but I plan to play with it to punch it up because it’s otherwise a winner!
This is the best method of cooking pulled pork I have tried. The dry rub and the no liquid added to the cooker worked great. Meat was tender and juicy and nicely seasoned. The bbq sauce got mixed reviews. 2/3 of the group did not care for it. The other 1/3 said it was just ok. I will keep the cooking recipe and ditch the sauce next time. Liked the slaw recipe.
This is delicious!! I made this yesterday for dinner. Planned to cook the pork ahead for dinner tonight, but the smell filled the house and we couldn’t wait. Didn’t change anything, and don’t plan to make changes in the future. Recipe is perfect as is.
I made this last night using my personal spice rub mix. The crockpot produced a juicy pork. I also made my Carolina BBQ sauce to go with it.
