Ingredients

  1. 6 potatoes, peeled and diced
  2. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  4. Seasoned salt
  5. Black pepper
  6. Canola oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Cook the potatoes in boiling water until tender. Then process them using a ricer or food mill OR mash them with a fork for a more lumpy texture.
  2. Add the flour, egg, some seasoned salt and pepper and combine.
  3. Form into balls, and then slightly flatten into discs. Let them cool completely.
  4. Heat some canola oil in a cast-iron skillet and fry the cooled tots until golden. Drain on a paper towel.
  5. You can freeze the tots after frying. Remove from the freezer when you need them and reheat in a 400 degree F oven for 10 to 12 minutes.

It’s not a tater tot I don’t know why on earth you call it that it’s fried mashed Potatos And no big deal
Michael Romero
In some of the other recipes for tater tots, it says squeeze out the water after boiling the potatoes.

These are nothing more than potato patties. Tater tots are par boiled potatoes that are shredded, cooled, mixed with seasoning, egg and flour, then shaped like traditional tater tots. They are not mashed potatoes formed and fried. I’m glad some people like them but it’s obvious these are not traditional tater tots.

Okay- what’s the deal here? These tots were in my fridge and well chilled before I dropped them in the oil and watched them completely disintegrate. I don’t get it….they literally disappeared in the pan…and boy what I salvaged was a greasy mess. I did add grated onion as noted by another reviewer which made them taste quite good before they melted away. This is not worth it.

Love them! I’ve modified recipe to include a cup of shredded cheddar cheese to make them cheesy tots. My family grabs them as soon as I bring them out of skillet before they can drain well on paper towels. I also started saving any left over mashed potatoes as they work just as well as making the potatoes fresh.

We loved these! And now that I can make them at home in large batches I will always have them on hand! Much healthier than the processed garbage from the freezer section of the grocery store.
