Homemade Deviled Ham Sandwiches

  4.6 – 47 reviews  • Honey

My great-grandmother from Ireland frequently fixed this. Every Halloween and the entire winter, my children are aware that they will have it.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 20 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 sandwiches

Ingredients

  1. ½ pound cooked ham, cut into chunks
  2. ¼ medium onion, sliced
  3. 3 tablespoons low-fat creamy salad dressing (such as Miracle Whip Light®)
  4. 2 teaspoons honey
  5. 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  6. 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  7. 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  8. ½ teaspoon paprika
  9. ⅛ teaspoon salt
  10. ⅛ teaspoon ground white pepper
  11. 1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or to taste
  12. 12 slices bread

Instructions

  1. Process ham and onion in a food processor until very finely chopped.
  2. Transfer ham mixture to a bowl. Thoroughly mix in salad dressing, honey, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, paprika, salt, white pepper, and hot pepper sauce.
  3. Make sandwiches by spreading a generous layer deviled ham between 2 slices bread, or cover and refrigerate deviled ham until ready to make sandwiches.

I have made this with both leftover ham and roast beef. It’s delicious both ways.

Great! This is what you do with Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter leftover ham. I also added 3 Tablespoons of dill pickle relish… So Yummy!

I made this today from leftover Easter ham. Honey Baked Ham. I did not have salad dressing, only mayonnaise. I added about 1/4 cup of white vinegar and a tablespoon of sugar. I left out the tabasco because family members will not eat spicy foods. This turned out incredibly delicious. I could eat this all by itself. My 80 year old mother-in-law ate every bite of her sandwich and we have problems getting her to eat! We will no longer eat store bought devilled ham. Love this recipe!

This was way too sweet for my liking. After reading several reviews I remembered the ham I used had been originally cooked all day in a crock pot with mustard & brown sugar. Therefore my experiment today tastes like honey ham. It’s good, but I was hoping to get the original flavor of Underwood deviled ham with the white label. Not even close. Next time if I use leftover brown.sugar ham I’ll have to omit the honey/agave.

Oh my goodness, this was incredible! I had some leftover peach glazed ham (recipe on AR) in the freezer. I figured I’ll just give this recipe a try and I’m so glad I did. I omitted the honey as the ham already had a sweet element to it. I added a couple of spicy pickles and extra dashes of hot sauce (I used Valentina). The sweet, salty, and spicy combination was spot on. One thing I would recommend in addition to the pickles is to use purple onion instead of yellow or white. It’s the perfect flavor to correspond with the spicy ingredients. Thank you, BL, for this extremely delicious recipe!

Very good. Made it as written. Makes great sandwiches.

This is a very good starter recipe. I added extra salad dressing, worcestshire, prepared mustard and hot sauce to meet my families taste.

Great recipe BL. So yummy. I followed your recipe except substituted Hellmann Mayo for miracle whip, and I cut honey to one teaspoon as I prefer less sweetness. Great for leftover ham.

I made it just like written, didn’t taste like deviled ham, tasted like regular ham salad.

I was never a big fan of deviled ham but rather than throw away some ham that needed used, I ran across this recipe and gave it a try. Followed it exactly and have to say it’s delicious! I liked it so much, I used the ingredients with some chicken I wanted to use up also. It was just as good with the addition of a little more Miracle Whip. Took me back to my childhood! Will definitely make both again.

This recipe turned out great. I actually didn’t really follow the recipe. I added ingredients that I had at the time and it was very good. very easy to make. It is now on my must make recipe box when I have extra ham.

I made this to help use up leftover ham. The family liked this recipe. I went by the recipe as best I could except I didn’t add any hot sauce and I had to use a substitute for the honey. I do think I will not add any salt the next time I make it as it is on the salty side but not enough for me to scrap. I tried this on triscuits first and didn’t seem to like it, but when I tried on ritz crackers I liked it better. The next day I made a sandwich and liked it even more, so if you aren’t sure about it at first try it on or in something else. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

This recipe is ok but there really are too many ingredients. The second time I made it, I added celery, deleted the honey and the mustard and would add a star to the rating with those changes.

Used a honey infused with garlic and cayenne. Delicious!

I love deviled ham spread, but no longer eat pork. I made this with turkey ham and it made a real good sandwich.

Easy to make and delicious! So worth the little effort over pre-made, store bought! Enough said! 🙂

The only thing I changed was using a bit of smoked paprika and as another reviewer suggested, was using Dijon mustard instead of yellow and dry. Super good, this is a keeper!
Regina Shannon
Exactly like Underwoods! Very tasty. Can be made even more spicy if you wish!

Perfect exactly as written!

Nice! I’ve always been on the fence about deviled ham; not exactly a fan, but not like I hate it either. This recipe may have converted me to “fan” status. I kept to the recipe, other than using low-fat mayo instead of Miracle Whip. The Worcestershire and mustard are a great combination with the ham. Not sure the paprika did much, perhaps I’ll try using smoked paprika next time. I think a tad less honey would be more to my taste. When I made the sandwich I added a bit more hot sauce and topped with dill pickle and I loved the pickle with this. This is a nice spread I’ll be making anytime I have leftover ham.

I followed the recipe as written, other than using Best Foods Mayonnaise as I hate Miracle Whip. If I make it again, I would reduce the onion by half (at least) as it simply reeked and tasted of raw onion. And adding salt to a ham spread is insane. I did it, as that’s what the recipe said to do, but it turns out way too salty.
