Grandmother’s Pork Chop Dinner

  4.2 – 71 reviews  • Braised

This was my grandmother’s recipe for pork chops with potatoes that were creamy and oniony. I hope you find it as entertaining as I do.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Total Time: 55 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. ¼ pound bacon
  2. 4 pork chops
  3. 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into thick slices
  4. 1 medium onion, sliced
  5. 1 cup water
  6. salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until cooked through but not crisp, about 6 minutes. Transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate; leave grease in the skillet.
  2. Sear pork chops in reserved bacon grease over medium-high heat until browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  3. While the pork is searing, chop bacon into small pieces.
  4. Add potato and onion slices to the skillet along with bacon. Pour in water, cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until potaotes are tender, about 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

This was a great easy meal. I took another reviewer’s advice to replace the water with broth, and that was a great idea, as it infused the potatoes with more flavor. I also increased the bacon, because, bacon.

I didn’t follow this exact recipe. I only had 2 pork chops. I also added red pepper flakes in the potatoes.

So good! I used perogies instead of potatoes and I had to ration them so everyone got some! My teenagers couldn’t get enough.

This was so bland and not presentable on the plate. The pork chops needed browned and potatoes just humdrum. I knew it would be as no seasonings in recipe but wanted to make as written because everyone always gives a 5 star review without making recipe as written. If you put your adjustment on it, it’s your recipe so write your recipe and present it to this site. Sorry grandma but someone missed something in this one.

I was so happy with this recipe! It was fairly easy to make and it turned out delicious. After reading some of the reviews I did change it up a little bit. I did add some carrots & garlic. Instead of water I used chicken stock. My family loved it and has already asked me to make it again

I added sweet peppers in with the onions and used chicken broth instead of water. Cooked with lid on then once it was tender I took the lid off and continued to let cook till the broth became a sauce

I made it according to directions. Didn’t realize until I tasted it that it would completely bland with no seasoning. I’ll make it again but add lots of garlic and rosemary, at least, when I make it again. It’s a good basis for further additions though. Also works for boneless skinless chicken thighs. But add garlic and herbs.

More or less pork roast and potatoes only quicker than crockpot

I, like many others, found it very bland and added garlic, rosemary and chicken broth instead of water. It’s a great starting point for a meal, but screams for a lot of help. Also, brown the meat and pour off some of the grease.

Followed recipe. Will make adjustments next time. A bit boring. Want crisper bacon and more spice.
