Bourbon-Glazed Ham

This is a great mash-up of approximately five recipes I discovered when looking for ideas for my first ham for Thanksgiving. The biggest comment I received was an empty baking pan!

Ingredients

  1. 1 (5 pound) boneless ham
  2. ⅓ cup bourbon whiskey
  3. ½ cup packed brown sugar
  4. 1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple in juice
  5. ½ cup honey
  6. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  7. 1 ½ cups water
  8. 1 (8 ounce) can pineapple rings

Instructions

  1. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes about 1/2-inch deep. Place the ham in a large, resealable bag. Add the bourbon, brown sugar, crushed pineapple, honey, and garlic to the bag; refrigerate at least 8 hours, turning the bag over several times while marinating.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Transfer the ham and marinade to a large baking dish; pour the water into the dish. Attach the pineapple rings around the surface of the ham with toothpicks.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F (95 degrees C), basting occasionally with the sauce in the pan, 90 to 105 minutes.

Substituted 1/2 beef and 1/2 chicken broth for water. Best ham we have ever had. Very tender and yummy!

This recipe is awesome! The only change I made was to add 1/2 chicken broth and 1/2 beef broth instead of the water. It came out perfectly! Just like last year!

I added maple syrup instead of honey and just thickened the glaze up just a little bit with more brown sugar.

I omitted the water after reading other reviews. I used a spiral ham so marinade was able to soak all the way through. It was good but not the glaze we were looking for. We all thought it was pretty bland. Only tasted the ham. Very disappointed.

We thoroughly enjoyed this ham! I used Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey instead of Bourbon as we had some of that. Worked out perfectly! I will make this again!

Rather than use this as a marinade and then spoon over while it’s baking, I found it best to take it and reduce it into a sauce. Yes, I started out just as the directions stated, but prior to putting the ham into the oven, I took about 1/2 of the juice and cooked it on the stove. Everyone raved about the reduction! Just heat it until it becomes a little syrup-y…. great as a dipping sauce or to pour over several slices. And that great Bourbon smell as it’s being reduced – wow!

I gave it 4 stars because it is so thin. I like a glaze that is thicker that sticks to the ham and the pineapple. Otherwise, this is a good recipe. I will thicken it with more sugar and in the future will not use 1/2 cup liquid to 1/2 cup sugar mustard mixture. I also did not use maraschino cherries because of the red dye. I used the jarred cherries from Trader Joe’s. I miss the maraschino flavour, but I like healthy more.

I followed the original recipe but as live alone, it was too much. The next time I didn’t make all the servings and only used pineapple pieces as the extra rings on top was as bit too much.
