Sunny’s French Bread Hawaiian Pizza

Foods can be polarizing, and I’m sure there’s someone out there that doesn’t like a classic PB&J, but it doesn’t mean the sandwich shouldn’t hold a place in the hearts of those that care. That is what this pizza is all about, loving what you love and not caring what everyone else says. Dare to put pineapple on your pizza!

Ingredients

  1. 1 large French loaf, split in half lengthwise
  2. 4 tablespoons garlic butter, melted
  3. 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
  4. 6 rings canned pineapple, patted dry
  5. 2 cups pizza sauce
  6. 16 ounces shredded mozzarella
  7. 1 hefty pinch crushed red chile flakes
  8. 6 ounces deli ham, small diced
  9. 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion
  10. Spicy honey, for drizzling, optional

Instructions

  1. For the bread: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Brush the inside of the bread with the garlic butter. Place on a baking sheet, buttered side up, and bake until the top is golden, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. For the pineapple: Sprinkle the steak seasoning on both sides of the rings and place on a baking sheet lined with nonstick aluminum foil. Roast, flipping once midway through, until caramelized, 25 to 30 minutes. Remove and roughly chop.
  3. For the pizza: Evenly distribute the sauce and cheese on each piece of bread. Add the chile flakes, ham, onion and pineapple. Bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 15 minutes. (Broil lightly as needed for golden brown color.) Serve sliced with a drizzle of spicy honey, if using.

Made this today and it was ok. More time consuming than I thought it would be. Next time I’ll use more pineapple and less ham & pizza sauce and also (my bad) shredded mozzarella from a chunk rather than from a bag. I’ll make again with a few tweaks. Love Sunny’s recipes.

Best Hawaiian pizza I’ve ever had was at Cafe Pesto on Big Island which used Kalua pork (roasted shredded) so I subbed that in. Delicious!

So I saw this recipe yesterday, before I got to watch the episode. First, I’d like to make a request for Sunny to show the process of making chili Flakes from the garden. Back to the recipe. I made this replacing the ham with bacon lardons (bacon is FAR better than slimy, nasty ham) but followed everything else as written. I thought it was good. I always add homemade pickled Jalapeños to my pizza, so mine had them,
