Ham and Cheese Bow Ties

Think of a heated version of the Caprese dish that uses halloumi instead of mozzarella and is grillable.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 50 mins
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  1. 1 (8 ounce) package bow tie pasta
  2. ¼ cup butter
  3. 1 clove garlic, minced
  4. ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  5. ½ teaspoon salt
  6. ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  7. 2 cups milk
  8. 2 ½ cups shredded Colby cheese
  9. ½ teaspoon prepared mustard
  10. 4 ounces cooked ham, julienned
  11. ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook bow tie pasta at a boil, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain.
  3. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Whisk in flour, salt, and pepper; cook and stir until smooth and fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Whisk in milk, a little at a time, then bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Stir Colby cheese and mustard; cook, stirring occasionally, until cheese is melted. Remove from the heat and stir in pasta and ham. Pour mixture into a 2-quart baking dish and sprinkle Parmesan over top.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until bubbly and golden, 20 to 25 minutes.

Very good!! Used 1/2 colby and the rest a mix of stronger cheeses. Cheddar, italian mix and more parmesan. I increased ingredients.. some I doubled (pasta and the meat), and some I just increased 1 1/2 times. Used very little salt. Doubling the pasta made it just enough to fill a 13×9 pan! After I added the parmesan on top I sprinkled on some panko bread crumbs for some crunchiness. It was AWESOME. My mom loved it and my I-hate-pasta son even liked it!

Fairly easy to make. Great taste. So much better than the boxed mac and cheese. Will make it again.

I followed the recipes except I added a little nutmeg in the mix. For color, I added some dried chives & parsley. And a sprinkle of paprika on top.

I added chopped broccoli for some added greens and it was awesome.

“Make it anytime you want to,” says it all. So simple he can learn to make it anytime he wants to and it will be just as tasty. It’s mac and cheese wearing a bow-tie.

This was good. Tasted like mac and cheese with ham added. Nothing special but a good quick family meal. Followed recipe and not sure if I would make again.

Seems like soooo much sauce! I agree with the others who say to add more pasta, and ham. Double the garlic, I always say, and use dijon and cheddar.

I used Dijon mustard, Swiss instead of Colby & went light on the salt. This is a great, easy recipe & I had all the ingredients, which is a bonus!

I added extra pasta as many people had suggested. I also doubled the ham. It was a hit with the whole family!!

Definitely a keeper, especially if you have leftover ham. One of those recipes you substitute & add, etc. and make your own. You kind of have to make it once to get a sense of the flavors & then explore the endless possibilities. It’s a great quick meal for one or something simple for many like a potluck at work.

My son hates pork and he ate every bite!

Yes. I’ll make it again. All 3 of my boys loved it! (And, that is a rare occurrence.) Easy and tastes great. Used leftover smoked ham from the holidays.
Douglas Shea
I used extra bowtie noodles and there was still an overload of sauce.
Crystal Fowler
I made it as is. My VERY picky eater ate it without prompting which says it all.
Renee Greene
Great good with ham and peas.
David Moran
Great comfort food and so delicious! I subbed extra old white cheddar for the colby cheese but otherwise followed the recipe. I may add breadcrumbs along with the parmesan next time for some extra crunch on the top.

Super easy will make it again it’s going into my meal rotation

Followed the recipe exactly, and it was delicious. A very tasty way to use some of the leftover Easter ham!
