Pizza Casserole

Sweet potatoes and a crunchy cereal breading add a little nutrition to this traditional dish.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 7
Yield: 1 (2-quart) casserole

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups uncooked egg noodles
  2. ½ pound lean ground beef
  3. 1 onion, chopped
  4. 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  5. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  6. 16 ounces pizza sauce
  7. 1 cup sliced pepperoni sausage
  8. 1/4 cup milk
  9. 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a boil. Cook egg noodles in boiling water until tender yet firm to the bite, 7 to 9 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Heat a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef, onion, bell pepper, and garlic in the hot skillet until beef is browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain excess fat from the skillet. Stir in cooked egg noodles, pizza sauce, pepperoni, and milk until well combined. Pour mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and continue baking until cheese is melted, 5 to 10 more minutes.

After reading some comments about the lack of flavor, I cooked a flank steak marinated in red wine, cut it up and and then added it in when cooking the veggies. Recommend adding the pepperoni during the onion/garlic/peppers step. For the sauce I used marinara. Also added 4-5 baby carrots for sweetness, fresh basil and oregano, and 1 portabella mushroom. Added a layer of parmesan and a handful of mozzarella after it was done baking. We loved it — SCARFED it all down.

This recipe was very good!!! Only thing I did different was using Jimmy Dean hot sausage instead of hamburger. It was excellent. We loved it and I know I will be making it again. Thank you for an easy and yummy recipe!

Easy peezy and very versatile. Added Italian sausage with the hamburger to give it some extra zest. (I added my sautéed mushrooms on my plate as my husband doesn’t do mushrooms–he’s missing out!) Used a good quality pizza sauce as someone else suggested does a lot for the flavor. Will make again. Enjoyed making pizza without a crust!

It was okay. Not sure what could make it better. Won’t be making this again.

I made this with marinara sauce that had sauteed onion and garlic. It was delicious also i used extra hamburger it wasn’t flat like the picture but even my husband said it was pretty good and that’s a compliment… Normally i follow a recipe and i screw something up but this was easy i also salted and peppered it….thank you for the ease of this recipe.

It was a hit but I omitted the pepperoni from the recipe. Thinking of adding mushrooms substituting pork sausage instead of the beef.

I downloaded this recipe in 2019 because it looked good, but while looking for another recipe in my saved recipe files, I came across this and decided to make it tonight. It is so good!!! My husband loves it!! I did make my own pizza sauce rather than store bought, but what a great combination of flavors, and so simple to make. Off to go make garlic toast!!

We loved this casserole. I made a couple of adjustments. I removed the bell peppers. Not a fan of them. Used 1/4 lb ground beef and added 1/4 lb Jimmy Dean pork sausage. Added 1/2 cup olives. Doubled the amount of garlic. Used 3 cups of egg noodles instead of 2 cups. Turned out fantastic! This is a keeper!

I made this recipe because I had most of the ingredients on hand and was pleasantly surprised! The only change I made was that I used a red pepper rather than a green pepper. Turned out great and the leftovers were just as good if not better! I highly recommend using a good quality pizza sauce.

Very good. I did use spiral noodles instead of egg noodles. Used hot Italian sausage instead of ground beef. Everyone enjoyed it.

Great basic recipe. I added Italian seasoning, left out the milk, used diced tomatoes in place of bell pepper, and layered the ingredients using cheese between the layers. My family loved it. Thanks to all the other’s reviews I had great ideas on how to modify.

Very good recipe! It came together quickly and easily but tasted like I spent hours on it. I added mushrooms and doubled the cheese (1 cup mozza, 1 cup cheddar) and baked it in a 9×13. I added the cheese before baking instead of pulling it out of the oven to add it. I put half of the mixture in a glass Pyrex, added half the cheese, added remaining mixture, and topped with the rest of the cheese…ensures even coverage of cheesy goodness. Thanks for the great recipe!

I thought this recipe was awesome!! I mean, who doesn’t love pizza in any shape or form. As a heart patient, I subbed turkey for the ground beef and couldn’t get enough!! Next time I will probably throw in some mushrooms and other goodies!
Matthew Burton
Very good! Different from the usual fare!
