I use this as a guide for a manhattan with regard to quantities. But I’d like to think I’ve perfect-ed it. I always use Woodford bourbon, not rye, instead of angostura bitters, I use cherry bitters and I add a little Luxardo cherry juice . Perfecto!

My go to Manhattan recipe. Many other recipes do not specify dry vermouth as an ingredient. We do not like sweet drinks so the addition of dry vermouth smooths this out nicely.

So, the perfect Manhattan is made a variety of ways from my experience and on a recent trip out west I ended up asking bartenders to mix it my way….so I guess my recipe varies a little from what is discussed here. First let me say that my family has been drinking the regular Manhattan for over 60 years that I know of, but probably closer to 100 years knowing my family.
The perfect manahattan in my book is 2 ounces of knob creek bourbon (a traditional bourbon), 1/2 ounce sweet and 1/2 ounce dry vermouth, add just a little grenadine (1/8 to 1/4 ounce depending on how sweet you want), and 2 dashes of angostura bitter….all over crushed ice (I drink it pretty quick so the ice does not have a chance to melt, but is ice cold!). You can throw in a cherry if you gotta have it, but not required. I first had this drink at a very nice restaurant on the east cost….$300 for dinner for two and fell in love with the drink over a regular Manhattan. After a few experiments, this is the recipe I came up with that tastes like what I had.

We aren’t huge Manhattan drinkers but we do love Geoffrey, so we gave it a try. Yummy! Very easy to drink. Smooth and tasty. Thanks GZ!
