Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for pan
- ½ cup minced white onion
- 1 pound ground turkey or chicken
- 3 slices fresh white bread, crusts cut off and chopped small
- 1 large egg
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
- Serving suggestions: lingonberry jam or egg noodles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Butter a rimmed baking sheet and set aside.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a large straight-sided skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until softened but not brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer the onions to a medium bowl and let cool.
- Add the turkey, bread, egg, 1½ teaspoons salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, allspice and nutmeg to the onions and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture becomes sticky, about 2 minutes. With clean, damp hands, roll the mixture into 1-inch balls (about 1 tablespoon) and place on the prepared baking sheet; clean and dampen hands as needed to prevent the mixture from sticking. Bake until the bottoms are slightly brown and the meatballs are firm, about 10 minutes.
- Wipe out the skillet and melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk to make a paste. Add the chicken broth and continue whisking until smooth. Bring to a boil over high heat, whisking occasionally, then reduce the heat to maintain a rapid simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened, about 8 minutes. Stir in the cream, Worcestershire and half the parsley and season with salt and pepper. Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook for 5 minutes to blend the flavors. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve with lingonberry jam as hors d’oeuvres or over egg noodles as a main course.

Craveably fantastic! Wish I could eat it every day!
This did not even taste like Swedish meatballs. Very bland and boring.
This was so bland. The gravy consists of flour, chicken stock and a little worcestershire sauce…that’s it. Absolutely flavorless.
I am always looking for new ground turkey recipes and this one just hit the spot! I especially like that the turkey lightens a heavy dish. I definitely prefer it here over the richness of pork or beef. This was a major crowd pleaser in my house. My husband, in-laws and 2 year-old twins destroyed this meal! My only difficulty was in incorporating the roux into the broth (I had to strain the gravy for some small lumps before adding the parsley). But I make gravy frequently with a slightly different technique so I feel confident I won’t run into this next time.
I didn’t enjoy this recipe at all. It was way too bland. For one, there was too much flour in the roux, this did make it creamy, but also just a little tasteless. I should have improvised more on this recipe, for example, putting nutmeg and even cloves in the sauce, but I didn’t. Once it was done the only way to make it taste more flavorful, was to add salt, which I never do. I actually ended up freezing the leftovers and will try to resurrect them into a soup of some kind. I’m just disappointed; boring recipe and didn’t taste like the amazing Swedish meatballs I’m used to..
Double the sauce! This tasted great but my girlfriend is a big fan of sauce and the recipe did not yield enough for more than 2 servings over egg noodles.
These meatballs were great, easy to make, and a big hit with my family! Even my picky eater loved them! I will definitely be making these again!
I enjoy meatballs
This was pretty delicious – i followed the recipe exactly and used ground chicken. The meatballs came out so good, the sauce tasted a little like creamed chicken soup.. but when put over the meatballs it was just delicious! THANK you food network 🙂
