The French name for a log-shaped Christmas cake is “buche de Noel.” This one is a delicious flourless chocolate cake rolled in chocolate whipped cream and topped with confectioners’ sugar to look like snow on a Yule log. It tastes fantastic in addition to looking lovely.

Reviews
UPDATE!! Original review was dated 2003!! So I had to come back here and say that it is now 2022 and this is STILL one of my family’s favorite recipes!! This recipe is WONDERFUL…i’d been itching to try something cajun for a long time….and this was the perfect recipe to cut my teeth on….. i will be making it when my husband’s family comes into town next week… fairly inexpensive and very easy to make….i made it even easier by using 2 cans of Rotel (diced tomatoes and green chilis) in place of the canned tomatoes and fresh chilis cause my grocer didn’t have the right kind of chili peppers….still came out wonderful….i even added more spices to it!! but we like it hot! If the spices are measured exactly as in the recipe, the effect is a moderate heat….but i have to say this is the BEST recipe i have tried so far i think….definitely one of our favorites….
We have been making this for years and we absolutely love it. Fantastic recipe!
Family enjoyed it. I made a few changes based on previous reviews about how HOT it was (kids don’t do HOT). I used kielbasa as my meat and diced it. I replaced the cayenne pepper with chili powder. Lastly instead of 2 15oz cans of diced tomatoes and 5 of chile peppers, I did 3 10.5oz cans of Rotel mild diced tomatoes. I will make this again
Tasty, but way too much black pepper, even without the chili peppers, it was unnecessarily spicy. I think I would make it again, but with toned down spices.
This will definitely get made again! I used andouille sausage which had a bit of kick to it so I omitted the hot peppers altogether. I used the full amount of cayenne which gave the dish a nice slow burn. I didn’t have a green pepper so that was also omitted. I added a diced carrot and 2 diced stalks of celery. I also increased the garlic to 4 cloves. I only used 1 can of kidney but might try with a second can next time. I served it over brown rice. So good!
Was excellent and easy
Everyone enjoyed this dish made exactly as written. I have also made it vegetarian and it was also very good. Wonder flavors
This is very good but very hot. I cut the cayenne and the peppers and it was still quite hot even after I put it on rice.

Nice and spicy, I made a few little changes similar to other folks’ due to what kind of beans and chilis were on hand, but it was a hit!
This is a quick and easy recipe for a weekday meal. The family loves it and this stays in rotation on the days I don’t feel like spending hours in the kitchen!
I was a bit worried that this would be too spicy for my little ones. I didn’t put the full amount of green chilies and it was a hit! Even my pickiest eater loved it.
This is an easy recipe with great flavor! I feed 27 fraternity brother twice daily, this was a big hit!
Without making alterations, this recipe is far too hot. I ended up dumping it out because my family couldn’t handle that kind of heat and I barely could. Second time around, I put no peppers and I only put 1/2 tsp black pepper & 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper. Then it was perfect for me and my family. This is a new favorite of mine.
This was great, if you make the changes that a lot of others have made. I used only 2 cans of beans, and one can of tomatoes. I also used fire-roasted mild green chiles instead of the jalapenos, and it was still too spicy. I will make it again, but next time using probably just 1/4 tsp. of cayenne pepper. That should give a little heat, without it going overboard. I served it one night with rice, and the next night with corn bread, and it was even better the next day.
This was delicious!!! After reading the reviews, I made a few adjustments (to accommodate my 7yr old’s pallet. I cut the recipe in half, we are a small family of 3. Used 1 can of lgt red kidney beans, 1 can of fire roasted tomatoes, omitted the peppers/chili’s (didn’t have either on hand), used Cajun seasoning, adjusted the ceyanne to our taste; added a couple dashes of hot sauce (we prefer Franks), 1 cup of beef broth, and carrots and celery for some color. My husband, Mr spicy food, added red pepper flakes to his and my daughter and I enjoyed ours as is.
Added Worcestershire sauce and chili powder and sirachi. Used white canellini beans because I didn’t have red. Spicy and delicious!
I love this recipe. It’s quick, easy, and tastes ssssoooooo good. I’m making it again for dinner tomorrow night.
Changes: 3 lbs of sausage, two green peppers, two onions, two cans chopped green chilies, two 28 oz can chopped tomatoes, chicken stock, only used the 3 cans of beans-did not increase. No hot chilies.
I’ve never had this before but I stumbled upon this recipe and said why not? I used two cans diced tomatoes with green chilies, 2 cans of beans, one small red beans and one kidney beans. I used kielbasa and reduced the black pepper to 1 tsp. and cayenne to 1/2 tsp. It was plenty spicy for me and my daughter didn’t want to try it but it would be too spicy for most kids I think. I also added 1/2 cup of water. Served with white rice and cornbread. This as a main course serves 4 max not the 12 as stated, but if made to be more of a side maybe it would serve 12. I love tomato based dishes and I really like beans so this was a win win! I’ll make this again.
I cut the black pepper to 1 tsp, cut the cayenne pepper to 1/2 tsp and omitted chile peppers and this was still VERY spicy but delicious too. I used a 13-bean mix that had been soaked overnight so added a can of chicken broth to allow that to simmer (for about 2 hours to cook them through) and used smoked beef sausage. Very tasty and filling meal!
