Military S.O.S. Feasty Style

  4.6 – 7 reviews

Remain upright! Suck that gut out! Set that chin up straight! AAAH! the excellent times! Actually, the S.O.S. you used to eat while you were in service wasn’t that horrible, was it? Allow The Feasty Boys to demonstrate their take on the S.O.S. that the U.S. Coast Guard is still referring to!

Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 2 teaspoons butter
  2. 1 (12 ounce) package maple flavored sausage
  3. 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
  4. 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  5. 4 cups milk
  6. 2 teaspoons beef bouillon
  7. 6 slices white bread
  8. 3 sprigs fresh parsley (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and maple sausage, and cook until no longer pink. Gradually mix in flour, while stirring continuously, until the mixture is thick and pasty. You may not need all of the flour. Slowly whisk in the milk using a fork so that lumps do not form. Stir in bouillon. Continue cooking and stirring constantly until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. The longer it cooks, the thicker it will get.
  2. Toast slices of white bread, and top with the meat gravy. Garnish with a little fresh parsley, and serve.

Maple sausage makes it over the top good.

My wife had never tried S.O.S. which I thought was a shame. I made this one for her, and it turned out much better than the stuff I’d eaten as a kid. It’s obviously not a gourmet dish, but it’s tasty and it makes a lot.

I did have to kick it up a notch but a great basic recipe. I did add a little Worchester sauce and some beef base plus salt and pepper. Nice, easy meal.

It is a good easy SOS recipe. I cooked some onions in pan first. I used regular sasuage . It taste so good that I hesitate to order it it when I go out. I ate this for 23 years and it still taste good. I went to a retiree breakfast once where they had 13 different crockpots full of their favorite SOS.

What really sets this one apart is the maple flavored sausage. Don’t recall the line cooks in the service having that, lol, but I could be wrong. Add some cracked black pepper and salt to your taste. The extra lean beef means that there is less shrinkage yet I used 1 1/4 or so of 80/20 and did not drain it. Yum

My grandfather used to make this recipe when we were all kids. It is soooo fantastic! Thanks for bringing back the memories!

My family has been eating this for years! We hadn’t used beef or the boulion before though. It makes a great dish even better. My grandaddy was in Korea in communications on the line and had this on leaves. He liked it so much that we started having it at home once a week. He use to say it was the only good thing about the war! Thanks for making this favorite even better!
