At my house, these grilled turkey burgers are a perennial favorite. They are quite flavorful, colorful, and texture-rich.

Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground turkey
- ⅓ cup chopped fresh basil
- 3 cloves garlic, crushed, or more to taste
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 4 ciabatta rolls
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ⅛ cup prepared pesto
- ½ red onion, sliced
- 4 leaves romaine lettuce
Instructions
- Combine turkey, basil, garlic, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Divide into 4 equal portions and form into hamburger patties.
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate. Grill patties for about 4 minutes per side. Place provolone slices on the patties; continue to cook until cheese melts. Place ciabatta rolls on the grill and cook until browned to your liking, 2 to 3 minutes.
- Mix mayonnaise and pesto in a small bowl until thoroughly combined. Spread onto the rolls. Place the turkey patties on the rolls and top with sliced red onion and lettuce.
- Pan-fry patties in a lightly oiled skillet over medium-high heat if preferred.

4.25.20 Followed this recipe to the letter, and it turned out pretty well. But here are a couple things that I will do differently in the future. A ciabatta roll is simply too much bread for a 4-oz turkey burger, and it’s just too chewy. I’ll use a good quality hamburger bun in the future. Also, I assembled exactly as written in this order: pesto mayo top and bottom bun, burger patty on bottom, slice of red onion, and romaine. This sandwich was hard to eat because the bread was so chewy that you really had to bite down hard, and then everything starts to slide off. Even if you decide to use a ciabatta roll, would recommend pesto mayo top and bottom bun, lettuce on the bottom, red onion, and burger. patty on top. Two teaspoons of salt for 1 pound ground turkey made the burgers too salty for me (sodium count in nutrition info is 1,965 mg), and I’m even a salt lover. Whew, wish I’d seen that before making this, would have cut back the salt back! The garlic and basil in the burger is very tasty, and the pesto mayo works beautifully on this sandwich. Yes, several tweaks for me, but I’d make again.
