Yield: 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  1. 2 ounces 100 percent agave silver/blanco tequila, divided
  2. 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  3. 4 limes, divided
  4. 1/2 small Hamlin or Valencia orange
  5. 2 tablespoons light agave nectar
  6. 3/4 cup ice cubes, about 3 to 4

Instructions

  1. Pour 1/2-ounce of the tequila into a small saucer. Spread the kosher salt in a separate small saucer. Dip the rim of a martini or other wide rimmed glass into the tequila. Lift out of the tequila and hold upside down for 10 seconds to allow for slight evaporation. Next, dip the glass into the salt to coat the rim. Set aside.
  2. Halve 2 of the limes, cut a thin slice for garnish from 1, and set aside. Juice the halved limes into the bottom of a Boston-style cocktail shaker. Cut the remaining 2 limes and the orange into quarters and add them to the juice in the shaker. Add the agave nectar to and muddle for 2 minutes until the juices are release. Strain the juice mixture through a cocktail strainer into the top of the shaker and discard the solids.
  3. Return the juice to the bottom of the shaker, add the remaining 1 1/2 ounces of tequila and any remaining on the saucer. Add the ice to the shaker, cover and shake for 30 seconds. Strain the mixture through a cocktail strainer into the prepared glass, garnish with reserved lime slice, and serve immediately.

Great balance of orange and lime. Super fresh, it’s our go-to recipe for margs. I only use 1/2 the agave and use Cara Cara oranges

This is delicious but it’s not a margarita. With that I will still make this recipe from time to time and maybe even add a quarter of an orange to my regular margarita recipe.

I used less lime and more orange. Delicious!

Definitely not your run of the mill Margarita.  It is definitely a matter of taste and I like it.  My wife took sip and puckered up from the tartness, but then easily finished the whole drink.  After that initial shock of how different this is from a restaurant Margarita it grows on you quickly.  A lot of room to play around with this recipe, up the agave if you like it sweeter, juice not muddle more of the limes/orange to tone down the zest.  Definitely a keeper.

When I crave margaritas, this is what I want! It’s the best margarita I’ve ever had! Thanks Alton, you never let me down.

Woohoo! Less agave and a little more tequila. This is fabulous!  The best margarita I have ever had, and I’m 66 -wait I mean 29!

No!  Whatever this drink is, do NOT call it a Margarita.  Call it a Tequila Sunset or something.  When I got to a bar and order a Margarita I expect the traditional recipe, with refreshing lime juice not syrupy sweet orange juice.  Now bars are embracing this recipe as the standard.  NO!

This is by far my favorite margarita I have ever had!  I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfect……just the right amount of sweetness, tart and alcohol. Ive had at least 50 different margaritas and this is still my favorite – Thanks Alton Brown

Really tasty, but I thought four limes much too tart and after making a few margaritas, decided to scale it back to two. Also doubled the tequila…A great starting point though!

I’ve never added orange juice to my margaritas (nor have I ordered any with this much orange), but this was very tasty — and potent. It’s easy (making 1 cocktail), but quite a bit of physical work (juicing the fruits) when preparing for 4-6 drinks! This is a keeper!
