Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 45 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  2. ⅔ cup crushed saltine cracker crumbs
  3. ⅓ cup minced onion
  4. 1 egg
  5. ¼ cup milk
  6. 1 ½ teaspoons ground ginger
  7. ½ teaspoon salt
  8. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  9. 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  10. ½ cup packed brown sugar
  11. 1 (15 ounce) can pineapple chunks – drained, with juice reserved
  12. ⅓ cup white vinegar
  13. 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  14. ⅓ cup chopped green bell pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, cracker crumbs, onion, egg, milk, ginger and salt. Shape mixture by rounded tablespoonfuls into meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place meatballs in skillet and cook until evenly brown, and meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch, brown sugar, reserved pineapple juice, vinegar and soy sauce. Mix until smooth, then pour into the skillet with meatballs. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils, about 5 minutes. Stir in the green pepper and pineapple chunks. Heat through.

I love these for parties or pot luck. They are always a hit!

Yep, this is the 1969 version. Just needs the flavors fortified a bit! I doubled the onion (cut very tiny), and sauteed ahead with lots of fresh garlic and ginger. The powdered ginger in the jar is tasteless, but it definitely needs ginger. Cooked meatballs in convection oven then threw all the sauce ingredients in saucepan and voila! EVERYONE LOVED IT!!!!!

so yummy and tastes great!

I’ve made this recipe numerous times and love it! I serve it over rice.

I’ve made this exact recipe for over four years and it’s an absolute family favorite! I usually make extra sweet-sour sauce to accommodate family members who LOVE to have extra sauce smothered on top of their rice. ??

This was DISGUSTING!! I am so disappointed. I followed the recipe and the ideas from other commentators. I would never ever make this again!! Should you make it, save pasta water, you’ll need it. This was way to sweet, the sauce was gloopy. I just hated it. AND worse I made it for Christmas eve, thought it would be special

The meatballs turned out great, I baked them instead of frying them. The sauce though needed more ginger and more soy sauce. I would use pineapple tidbits or crushed instead of chunks. When Iput it all together, it was almost tasteless. Maybe a stronger onion? Garlic added?

These turned out very well, and I will definitely make them again. Followed the recipe exactly except I made them the night before. Loosely covered the dough and refrigerated overnight. The next morning I made the topping, shaped the rolls, and let them raise for approximately 1/2 hour. Perfect! My first time making sticky buns, in fact, my first time trying them too. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

very good sweet and sour meatballs. For one of my sons it was too sweet but the sweet and sour sauce tastes just like a Chinese restaurants would. I baked the meatballs and put all the sauce ingredients in the pan at once. The directions for both were in the allrecipes.com dinner tonight cookbook.

This is a Mother-in-law favorite! We do Sunday dinners at my wife’s mother’s house and I fix this, by request about every other month. I keep pineapple in the cupboard just in case! Have to agree with other reviews about baking the meatballs ahead of time. Just makes good sense!

Havent tasted this recipe in 30 years but it was true to memory! I doubled the green pepper. Might increase the sauce next time as well. Wonderful variation of sweet and sour!

These were a huge hit in my house! Everyone loved them! This recipe is now added to our favorite dinner meal planner. The only think I changed was that I used ground chicken instead of ground beef.

I’ve done this over and over when the kids were young (and still make today) and now they are making it for their kids. Great for cocktail parties. Make smaller meatballs and skewer with pineapple and red/green pepper. I’ve also used oats when I did have crackers. Also tried fruit cocktail with cherries instead of pineapple.

Been making this for years, got the recipe from my mom. I too bake the meatballs in the oven rather than on the stove.

I made this last night for my husband. He thought I was weird, but he ate the whole plate. Tonight he asked for it again. I think I found a new gem!

This recipe is AWESOMESAUCE!!!

My mother made this in the 70-80s. It turned out great! I used ground turkey I reduced the sugar by 1/4 and used Splenda brown sugar- I was surprised to find out I was all out of ground ginger- however I had frozen “cheat ginger “ from Trader Joe’s – I microwaved 3 cubes and threw it into the meat mixture. I added 2 teaspoons of worcheshire sauce into the meatballs.

This sweet ‘n sour sauce is absolutely divine. I served this with “Orange Rice Medley” from this site and it made for the perfect combination.

One of the best meatball recipes have used! Two thumbs up!!

Robin Kemp
I made no changes to the recipe. It was too sweet for our taste. I would not make it again
