The Twenty Dollar Burger

  4.1 – 57 reviews  • Hamburgers

When we were children, my mother used to make this pinto bean and ground beef recipe, and I have frequently used it to feed my four boys. This is one of the recipes I used to help feed the many people that flocked to our little town the night the space shuttle crashed in search of the wreckage. Every time, people loved it. For a full supper, we served it over rice and with cornbread and a side salad. With homemade sweet salsa, my mother would garnish a dish of this. Yum!

Yield: 6 burgers

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon butter
  2. 1 small red onion, diced
  3. 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  4. ¾ cup plain lowfat yogurt
  5. 1 teaspoon salt
  6. 1 teaspoon black pepper
  7. 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  8. 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  9. 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  10. 1 tablespoon horseradish
  11. 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  12. 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
  13. 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  14. 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  15. 1 tablespoon chipotle-flavored hot sauce
  16. 2 pounds lean ground beef

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add red onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion softens and begins to turn brown, about 8 minutes. Scrape onion into a large bowl. Add yogurt, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, mustard powder, garlic powder, horseradish, parsley, cilantro, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and hot sauce. Whisk together until smooth. Mix in the ground beef until evenly blended with the yogurt mixture. Cover, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  2. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Shape mixture in to 6 patties 1/2 inch thick, and 5 inches across.
  3. Grill burgers until no longer pink in the center, about 6 minutes per side.

I let it sit overnight and the burgers melted in my mouth! They had a nice balance of flavors with a small touch of heat.

Very delicious burger. I will make it again

Oh my this burger was outstanding, I used Siracha. My family raved about the flavor of this burger!

This was tasty and a great change from the usual burger! I wasn’t sure how my family was going to feel about the cilantro (some like it, some don’t), and I even thought about omitting it but decided to go for it. It was a nice addition and no one minded it at all! I did make some small dietary changes like using light butter, but nothing that would affect the recipe. All in all, this was fun to make and try and I would most likely make them again-yum! Thanks for sharing

i will pay 100 dollars for this juicy burg

Fell apart. Then overcooked. A mess. Too spicy. I will stick w Paul Newman who tosses ground chuck into a burger cooks naked on the grill. Cook properly. Dress it up afterwards I like mine med rare.

Boy howdy! This could be a $30.00 burger!!! It is the only hamburger that I am preparing this summer and my two teenage boys inhale these every time I make them!

The burgers fell apart on the grill but the taste was fine. The leftovers I will remake into sloppy joes and serve on toast.

when you’re grilling them they fall apart.

Spicy, yes; but not all that delicious. ‘Not bad for sure, just not amazing. I halved the spices since kids might try. With half, still a nibble of heat (not really flavor, but heat). ‘Not a lasting heat, like jalapenos. I’d think recipe as is would produce a more than mild, almost medium, heat; a good bite (yes, bite). 🙂

Definitely the best home made burger I have ever had! After my hubby was diagnosed with high blood pressure I’ve had a heck of a time trying to find good recipes to replace our old salt laden faves. I took out the salt and the soy sauce and used tobasco said instead of the hot sauce. Used a whole wheat bun and Swiss cheese. The spice is what will keep us coming back to this gorgeous recipe. However I would greatly recommend cutting they cayenne, pepper and horseradish in half or quarters if you are feeding that to the youngings. He’s the burger connoisseur, so I am incredibly pleased to have found something he’ll enjoy instead of just put up with. Thank you !!!

I needed to cut the liquid ingredients by 1/2 to get them to hold together. Taste was very good.

If you are looking for a quick fix, this is not your recipe. But if you want to make deluxe-burgers, go for it! I have done these burgers several times now and only get compliments. Only thing I recommend changing as other reviewers said is adding 1 cup of oats to be able to handle the meat easier. Also if you have kids, I would recommend cutting the black & cayenne pepper by half. Thank you for sharing this excellent recipe!

This was really good, even my five year old liked it and he doesn’t like much. I used regular hamburger instead of turkey and it turned out great, kinda Tex Mex tasting…

Great burger! I used olive oil to saute the onions and garlic. I put a small amount of BBQ sauce and may on the bun with a fresh avocado and enjoyed bliss!! It turned out quite juicy as well. I will be making lots of these. I too went shopping for most of the ingredients and it was well worth it.

Good burger. I suggest using less cayenne & pepper… a wee bit spicy. Topped with bacon.
Lori Cuevas
Good burger but a long list of ingredients for just a “good” burger.
Howard Walker
Used 1/2 c. sr. cream (vs. 3/4 c. yogurt). Was still crumbly and too spicy for my liking.
Robin Bauer
These were just ok. I was so excited after all the great reviews but they were very mushy. The only change I made was to substitute sour cream for the yogurt like others had done. The flavor was good but just too mushy. Sorry!

This is a good burger. I doubled the recipe and followed it exactly until it was time to mix the seasoned yogurt in with the meat. I realized that if I mixed the entire amount I would have a soup that would not hold together on the grill. So I mixed what seemed to make sense and had about half the yogurt mixture left when I was done. Next time I might try the suggestion of mixing in some oatmeal to help them hold together. Anyway, everyone liked them at the party, even though my husband thought some may not. Even the well done burgers were juicy and full of flavor. I will use this recipe again.

I made these for a house full of teenagers and I got great reviews. They said they were the best homemade hamburgers they ever had.
