This is a simple dip that tastes wonderful by itself or as a basis for any flavor you desire. Eat it immediately or let it cool.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 4 large baking potatoes, peeled and cubed
  2. 1 tablespoon butter
  3. ¼ cup milk
  4. 2 pounds ground lamb
  5. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  6. 1 cube beef bouillon
  7. 12 button mushrooms, sliced
  8. 1 onion, finely chopped
  9. 1 (16 ounce) can baked beans
  10. 1 (12 ounce) can canned diced tomatoes
  11. 3 tablespoons brown gravy mix (Optional)
  12. 1 (15 ounce) can carrots, drained (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Place the potatoes into a saucepan and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat until tender enough to pierce with a fork, about 10 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk to your desired texture.
  3. Meanwhile, crumble the ground lamb into a large skillet. Cook and stir until no longer pink. Season with Worcestershire sauce and beef bouillon. Add the mushrooms and onion; continue to cook and stir until tender. Transfer the contents of the skillet to a large casserole dish.
  4. Mix the baked beans, diced tomatoes, gravy mix and carrots in with the lamb. Dollop big blobs of mashed potatoes over the top and carefully spread evenly to cover the entire top. Rake over it with a fork to create a crispy texture on top when it browns.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until the top is browned and crisp.

Fantastic!

Very good starting point. Had to modify for a picky fam- used beef rather than lamb. Corn rather than carrots and left out the beans/diced tomatoes. Still flavorful- love the addition of the Worcestershire sauce!

I was impressed! Very tasty! I added corn, which I recommend because it worked well in the mix!

Hooray ..a recipe that uses lamb .. loved it very traditional in the UK …have leg of lamb use the left overs & freeze for another day.

I loved this! I added more seasoning to the beef (just garlic powder and S/P), made the mash without milk cause I didn’t have any and made peas and carrots on the side! It was so good! Even my mom went in for seconds and that’s rare! thank you so much for the recipe.

Simple and yummy! I used ground beef, added corn and peas since I didn’t have mushrooms on hand. I didn’t have brown gravy mix either, but didn’t miss it. It came out warm, comforting and delish. A family hit!

Absolutely wonderful hearty comfort food,, The whole family was impressed, and it was the first time our little Texas family had tried an English style dish! Thanks Sophie!!!!

So wasn’t expecting the great feedback! So thank you all very much! This really is a versatile recipe, and the great thing is that when you swap out the lamb mince for beef mince, you just change the name from shepherds pie to cottage pie :0) The mince base is also really great with a jacket potatoe or in a bowl with a piece of crusty bread. It’s what our family calls a rib coater, great on cold nights.

Very liquidy but good – might pass on the baked beans next time in lieu of green beans, personal preference. Kids loved it (over and over again…made a LOT of food). Great flavor!

baked beans in it is genius. Its also awesome that it only takes 20 minutes to cook. Awesome recipe thank you for your amazing contribution to the world 😀

I made this for dinner tonight and my picky husband went for 3rds! Unheard of!

However, I did not use ground lamb, $8.99 a pound was just too expensive so I used ground beef. That technically does not make it a shepherds pie I know, but it was delicious anyway. Other then that, I followed the recipe exactly.

Thanks for this great recipe.

Yeah, its shepherds pie, so its not the most exotic thing you can put on the table. But it is quick, easy, and one of the most flavorful shepherds pie I have had. I did use all “optional” ingredients to put as much flavor in as possible. Long story short – quick, easy, tasty. If the family doesn’t like it let them cook for themselves!

First of all, YUMMY!! My family of 6 loved it. I thought there would be some leftover, but we ate it all. The family said, “This one is a keeper!” I had to make some changes, just because I did not have them available to at this time. I didn’t use lamb, not something I buy; also I didn’t have any fresh mushroom or a can of baked beans. I used pork and bean instead. I also made the mistake of using instant potatoes. I will defiantly use real mashed potatoes next time. EXCELENT PIE!! Thanks for the recipe!!

Very nice…lamb is the original Shepherd’s pie…hence the word Shepherd…thanks!
