Slow Cooker Texas Pulled Pork

Ingredients

  1. 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  2. 1 (4 pound) pork shoulder roast
  3. 1 cup barbeque sauce
  4. ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  5. ½ cup chicken broth
  6. ¼ cup light brown sugar
  7. 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
  8. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  9. 1 tablespoon chili powder
  10. 1 extra large onion, chopped
  11. 2 large cloves garlic, crushed
  12. 1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme
  13. 8 hamburger buns, split
  14. 2 tablespoons butter, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Pour vegetable oil into the bottom of a slow cooker. Place pork roast into the slow cooker; pour in barbeque sauce, vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, garlic, and thyme. Cover and cook on Low for 10 to 12 hours or High for 5 to 6 hours until pork shreds easily with a fork.
  2. Remove pork from the slow cooker, and shred the meat using two forks. Return shredded pork to the slow cooker, and stir to combine with juices.
  3. Spread the inside of both halves of hamburger buns with butter. Toast buns, butter-side down, in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Spoon pulled pork into toasted buns.

Amazing result! But I did a few changes 🙂 first I rubbed the pork with chilli powder, onion powder, garlic powder , cumin, brown sugar, salt and pepper and I seared the pork!! In my dutch oven 🙂 After that I added all the ingredients BUT not the thyme, no brown sugar since I rubbed already. Half of the broth, half of vinegar and half bottle normal bbq and half bottle honey bbq. 300 for 4 hours in the oven ….DELICIOUS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!! :))) new addition for our superbowl party! The sauce omg thik and flavoful no need for corn starch !!!

Great flavor….the sauce gets too runny in a crockpot though. This is probably exceptional in an oven with a dry rub and slow roast then adding the sauce while shredding. Crockpots don’t allow the moisture to escape so it’s braising instead of roasting. Reducing the liquids in half will help but the pork fat will still keep the sauce from adhering properly. Reserving the sauce til shredding time is another option. I did add liquid smoke…

Heaps of liquid when finished, so next time I’ll omit chicken broth- will add chicken stock cubes instead. Mine was 1/2 bbq sauce and 1/2 Smokey bbq sauce. I think Smokey bbq sauce improved it. For those who don’t like pulled pork to be sweet, you can easily half the sugar

This is great!!! I was wondering about no salt or pepper but none needed. Used Tabasco bbq sauce because we like kick! Agree with the other comment of mixing ingredients and adding over pork. I grated the garlic in the sauce too. I’ll definitely make again!

Wonderful! I cooked mine exactly as the recipe called for & I wouldn’t change a single thing about ingredients or how it was done. After meat was tender, I took it out of the slow cooker & put it into a bowl & shredded it really well. Next I put the shredded meat back into the sauce in the slow cooker & let it simmer for about an hour longer. I served it over mashed potatoes with a tossed salad. Everyone LOVED IT! Thank you for a GREAT recipe!

I cooked on high for 6 hours, and even after all that, the pork only shredded a little bit. We ended up having to chop it so that we could serve it for the party. It came out a liquidy, watery mess. The vinegar and onion taste really did not do it for me at all. I prefer pulled pork that is sweet and saucy (not at all watery) with barbecue sauce. This was pretty awful and I won’t do it again.

Really good pulled pork recipe. My husband liked it enough he asked to put it in the menu rotation! I decreased the brown sugar to 1/8 of a cup and will probably omit it entirely next time. It just doesn’t need it depending on the BBQ sauce used. Easy and tastes good – a win in our book!

I made this but didn’t have thyme. We used Italian Seasoning. Thought it should have tasted more “barbecuey”. Used everything else like directed. BUT! We have little leftovers and my non-barbecue child ate her whole sandwich and loved it! We served the sandwiches with corn on the cob, deviled egg potato salad and cesar salad. Was very tasty.

This is a very good basic recipe, but I have found 2 ways to make sure I like the flavor: 1) Make the sauce separately in a saucepan and heat to try the flavor. I substituted maple syrup for the brown sugar (I regularly do that), and found that I needed a little more chili powder. 2) Season the meat with salt and pepper.

Honestly it’s pretty flavorless. I read the comments beforehand so I left out the sugar, added extra chili powder, and I rubbed the meat with salt before cooking it. After the meat was cooked I added more bbq sauce too because I like the bbq flavor and I couldn’t really taste it. I just think this recipe lacks flavor, but it’s a good base to add your own touches to!
