We enjoyed this! I had 1.5 lbs of ground sirloin, the sauce looked like a bit more than needed so I added 2 heaping teaspoons of cornstarch before adding to beef. It thickened up beautifully and was a big hit with entire fam! I loved the idea of using salsa instead of all that chopping and additional time to cook. Thanx for posting!!
I liked it just fine. My husband said it was way too tomatoey, and my daughter said just a little to much tomato. Next time I’ll cut back on the ketchup! I used mild salsa and a few shakes of hot sauce. I could kick it up to medium and a little more hot sauce.
Made as is . Loved the recipe. My go to for sloppy joes!
It was easy, but it just tasted like meat with ketchup to my family. also too much sauce for just a pound of meat. I won’t be making it again. Better recipe’s out there.
This is a delicious receipe. I didn’t have enough ketchup so I added a half cup of bbq sauce and that did the trick! And it past the husband test.
This recipe had great flavor. I followed the advice of another reviewer and added onion, garlic and liquid smoke. This probably also needs another 1/2-1 additional pound of beef. Otherwise, this was an amazing recipe!
Excellent recipe!
OK, this was amazing. I didn’t use exactly what was on the recipe but it worked out every well all the same. Thanks for offering up for others to make.
Great and easy! Added a slice of cheese to each.
Eh. Tasted like nothing more than regular sloppy joes, after I used a cup of salsa. The ketchup was about a half-cup too much. It got *very* soupy with the recipe amount. Chef’s John’s Turkey Sloppy Joes still is my favorite.
Followed the recipe. A little sweet for my taste. Maybe cut back on the ketchup next time.
we love this recipe! thank you
I omitted the vinegar because my ketchup was already very tangy. I added a teaspoon of McCormick Montreal Steak seasoning to the hamburger while browning. I used just under 2 pounds of hamburger and it was still plenty saucy. I didn’t have buns, so I served the meat mixture over oven-baked french fries and sprinkled with cheddar cheese. Delicious!
My fam thought it was too sweet, but my mom said she really liked it considering how much she doesn’t like the canned kind. I used Pace hot chunky salsa, yellow mustard because I did not have dijon mustard, tapatio for the hot sauce, and I added onion to it. On my personal sand which I also added more fresh onion, pickled jalapenos, toasted Italian bread since we didn’t have rolls or buns and sharp cheddar cheese. I think I would add less ketchup and brown sugar, maybe half if I made it again. Especially since the salsa I used was more watery. I’d like to try with pico instead of salsa and garlic.
Nothing wrong with this recipe . I think this recipe is just what people are looking for when they want Sloppy Joe’s. I love the addition of salsa. For me it was too sweet, too tart. I added about 3cups of water and let it cook down to thicken.
As with many of the other reviews, the ketchup was too overpowering for the dish. However I decided to continue with the original recipe to form a complete opinion. I agree on using the ketchup sparingly and add some tomato paste for the flavor. Add ketchup to taste.
Great recipe, I didn’t add the brown sugar and only a teaspoon of vinegar.
I’ve made this a few times the only thing I did differently was added a little roasted garlic and Habanero
Fabulous and easy. I added some extra onion, omitted tabasco because I used spicy salsa and cut back on ketchup, salsa & vinegar because I didn’t want it quite so saucy. It was really, really good.
This is sooo yummy!! I usually skip the brown sugar since the ketchup is sweet enough. I also substitute red wine vinegar since that’s what I keep on hand. Comfort food at its finest!
Excellent sloppy joes. No match for caned Manwjich
