This dish doesn’t contain green pepper, therefore kids love it. This was added to the menu at a kids’ camp, and it has been a hit for a while. They are ‘neat’ rather than messy because the mixture is thick. This reheats and freezes easily.

Ingredients
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 8 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until evenly browned, stirring to crumble. I like to use a potato masher to even out the lumps. Add onion and celery, cover the pan, and cook until tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Drain off any grease.
- Stir the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and garlic powder. Heat to a simmer over low heat, and cook until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently to prevent it from burning on the bottom.
- Spoon the hot beef mixture onto buns, which may be toasted first, and serve.

Quick and easy and delicious
Made this to directions but omitted the veggies for kids and they went nuts! (The two younger ones even said they didn’t like these before and they ate it up! This reminds me of the old Dairy Queen bbq sandwiches. We’re keeping this in the rotation!
Best sloppy joe recipe! Easy and delicious!
Best sloppy Joe recipe ever!
I have been making this recipe since 2011. It taste traditional like what we had in school lunches in the 1970’s, I found this recipe to be kid tested and adult approved. Adults love it along with the kids. 5 stars to Aunt Mamie who submitted this recipe! A p.s. note, if so desired, because people’s desires vary, drain off the grease as noted in the recipe, because if not, there may be a greasy texture left on your lips.
My (adult) kids won’t eat it any other way! Delicious
Great recipe. I followed it pretty much except I did not have enough celery so I did a half c. of celery and a half c. of green peppers. I was skeptical about the vinegar but found that it only enhanced all the flavors, not add any vinegar flavor. The next day it was even better. Thanks this is the perfect not-so-sloppy, sloppy joe.
Followed recipe and added some green peppers. This has way too much sugar in it. I dumped some yellow mustard in it(normal recipe) to kill the sweetness. Maybe i will try it again with far much less brown sugar.
Easy, fast and tasty. I used a bit more onion than listed and split the amount of celery with sweet peppers
This is a go to recipe that I really like. Simple and delicious with good ingredients (I don’t use canned tomato soup though, I sub no salt tomato sauce or salsa.) So easy to take this basic recipe and add or change the ingredients and how you serve it.
Love Love this recipe!! A family favorite!
Used bell pepper rather that celery
Made it as written great recipe, far superior to store product.
I would give this recipe 10 stars if I could. I do not like the commercial canned sloppy Joe stuff in stores. I tried this recipe years ago & I should have reviewed it then but just wanted the creator to know my family requests them all the time!
Loved the fact that it wasnt messy
Amazing! Best version ever! We didn’t even have any garlic on hand but it was great without it!
This is by far the BEST sloppy joe’s recipe out there. Since finding it and making it the first time, my family asks for it no less than once or twice/month! We have ages all over the board in our house and it’s a hit with everyone. Thank you for sharing!
Loved this sloppy joe recipe! I’ve tried 3 others on here, but this is my favorite… I added a little bit of Worcestershire and green peppers!!! Must have.
Spouse loved it.
Love this recipe.. I add yellow peppers instead of celery and it blends in fairly well (for discerning kid eyes).
Used ground beef but cooked and then drained. Added other ingredients refrigerated overnight. After reheating, tasted great.
