Low-Carb Salisbury Steak

The flavorful steaks are great on their own and have a lot of flavor. It is beyond amazing after the mushroom gravy is added.

Ingredients

  1. 2 pounds ground beef
  2. 1 onion, diced
  3. 2 eggs
  4. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  5. 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  6. 2 teaspoons salt
  7. ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  8. ½ teaspoon onion powder (Optional)
  9. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  10. 7 tablespoons butter
  11. 2 cups sliced button mushrooms, or more to taste
  12. 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  13. 1 cup beef broth
  14. 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  15. ½ cup sour cream
  16. salt and ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix ground beef, onion, eggs, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, parsley, 2 teaspoons salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper together in a bowl. Split steak mixture into 6 portions and form into patties.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties, 3 at a time, until slightly browned on one side, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until other side is browned, about 5 minutes more. Repeat with remaining patties, pouring off any excess liquid. Place Salisbury steaks on a plate and cover with aluminum foil to maintain heat.
  3. Melt butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer mushrooms to a bowl, reserving butter in the skillet.
  4. Stir flour into the butter until dissolved. Pour in beef broth slowly, stirring until thickened, about 7 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce; cook, stirring frequently, until gravy starts to thicken slightly, about 5 minutes. Add sour cream and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring until all sour cream is melted and gravy is light brown, about 2 minutes.
  5. Stir mushrooms back into the gravy. Remove from heat and let cool until thickened, about 2 minutes. Ladle gravy and mushrooms over steak patties.
  6. Use high-fat ground beef if possible.
  7. You can also keep steaks warm in the oven.

So good! Double the gravy.

I loved this dish!! I used xanthan gum as a thickener instead of flour. I will be making this again!

need to have a mushroom gravy without the flour…

I love this! I have made it several times. I didn’t change a thing, followed the recipe everytime. Delicious!

Tried this for dinner last night and my husband loved it! I will definitely make this again.

Was very good, I added crispy fried onions on top. My husband enjoyed that

This is not low carb at all by the time I pour it on my mashed taters (or rice). Yum!

Kudos Chef DJ! Fantastic recipe! My wife purchased really lean hamburger, so I added a little olive oil to help the patties brown better. As a member of savory spice, I also added some hickory rock and maple pepper seasoning to the patties as they cooked. Best Salisbury steak/mushroom gravy recipe I’ve ever eaten!! I saved a portion for my elderly neighbor and she told me I can make this recipe how often as I want!

Low carb is just what I was looking for. I need to eat low saturated fat as well, so I mixed ground turkey with the beef. It formed perfectly, and was so flavorful. I drained the pan well and added 1 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp smart balance for the gravy. I added a little sour cream, but wish I hadn’t as the flavor was more like stroganoff (pretty good tho!) I froze some and that will make a simple future dinner. I love when people build on recipes in reviews because it gives me a lot of ideas.

Next time I’ll add a little more flour to the gravy. As instructed the gravy was a little thin.

This is great food for the soul. Really great recipe. This is a picture of what’s left.

My husband and love this recipe. I made as it was written. We eat it with mashed potatoes and steamed meal. We love mushrooms so I do add some extra. The one other change I would make is less salt in the patties. 1 tsp is plenty.

Will make again! Delicious! I doubled the amount of Worcestershire in the sauce as the sour cream over powered it just a tad.

Loved this! I have never made Salisbury Steak before, but this recipe looked really good. I made my patties a little smaller and I had no problem with them falling apart. My boys do not like crunchy onions so I sauteed them before adding to the HB Meat – other than that, made exactly to recipe and it was wonderful. Definitely a hit and I will making this again!

This was easy and tasty. I did not have the gravy, but my husband said it was great. On the gravy I used 3 tablespoons of butter instead of 7 and it was fine. Also used a 10 oz can of beef consomme instead of beef broth because that’s what I had, very tasty.
Laura Hendricks
Really tasty but the sodium was pretty high.

I rated this recipe the first time I made it with 4 stars, but have to say I just made it for the second time and didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the first time. I made it exactly like the first time so I don’t know what was different. We try not to eat too much red meat so if I’m going to have a beef patty, I would prefer my delicious home-made burgers. My hubby agrees!!
Benjamin Walsh
Went over well. Definitely will double the gravy next time!
