Ingredients

  1. 1 pound lean ground beef
  2. 1 (8 ounce) package sliced white mushrooms
  3. 1 onion, chopped
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  6. 1 cup red wine
  7. 1 cup beef stock
  8. 1 cup sour cream
  9. 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  10. 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  11. 1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef, mushrooms, and onion. Cook and stir until beef is browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard grease. Transfer mixture to a bowl. Add garlic and oil to the skillet; saute until garlic is golden brown, about 1 minute.
  2. Turn skillet heat to high; add red wine and beef stock. Bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors meld, about 5 minutes.
  3. Whisk sour cream and cornstarch together in a bowl. Mix into the wine/broth mixture. Stir in the browned beef mixture. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Add salt and pepper.

Recipe turned out pretty good. Did make a few changes though. Sauteed onion, mushrooms and garlic and set aside while browning the meat. Added the mixture back to the ground beef after cooking. Should have gone with 4 Tbsp of cornstarch, with only 2 the gravy is a little thin. 1c of wine was too much for this recipe, 1/2 would be plenty.

A big hit! Loved the red wine and the fact that it didn’t involve a can of soup! The only change I made was I added a glob of Dijon mustard and some garlic powder. A definite keeper!

I followed the recipe exactly and it was really good. Even my fussy hubby liked it.

Made as written and this turned out good. I actually made another similar recipe on the same night. It used white wine instead of the red. I liked the other recipe a tab bit better but hubs liked this one better. What the other recipe had that this one didn’t was a splash of Worcestershire and I think this one would benefit from it too.
