Since I was a child, this recipe has been a favorite of mine, though I’m not sure where it originated. I make it for my husband now that I’m an adult, and he also enjoys it.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 6
Yield: 1 – 9×13 baking dish

Ingredients

  1. 4 potatoes
  2. 1 pound lean ground beef
  3. 1 onion, chopped
  4. 2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed tomato soup
  5. 1 (15 ounce) can green beans, drained
  6. 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Peel and quarter potatoes, and introduce into boiling water; cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and onion until beef is brown. Drain. Stir in tomato soup and green beans. Pour into a 9×13 baking dish. Mound mashed potatoes in a ring around the meat mixture (do not cover meat). Sprinkle potatoes with shredded cheese.
  4. Bake in preheated oven 30 minutes, until potatoes are golden.

Brings back childhood memories! Delicious..

Pretty good. I used the mushroom soup, too, and added Worcestershire sauce. I wasn’t wow-ed, but it was good. Would I make it again? Not sure.

This come out of one of the women magazines back in the late 70’s. My kids loved it too and it was a great way to use leftover mashed potatoes. This is perfect just the way it is. But do your own twist.

Been making this for almost 50 years and have always called it Hamburger Casserole until a few years ago when someone said-Oh that is Shepherds Pie! And I still call it Hamburger Casserole. And I make it exactly the same. Just came on to look for what to do with a pound of hamburger. Voila!!!!! Perfect!!

I cooked the hamburger with diced onions in a fry pan, drained grease. I didn’t have tomato soup, I used diced tomatoes with liquid it came in, mixed with mixed vegetables, blended together. I had some leftover mashed potatoes I heated in microwave. When serving put the hamburger vegetable mixture, with a couple spoonfuls mashed potatoes on top with some shredded Mexican cheese melting on top.

What a great idea. I used Hunts Traditional Pasta Sauce instead of tomato soup. Also, I added frozen mixed vegetables instead of just green beans. Great raves from everyone. I would make this delightful dinner again and again.

I had a similar recipe years ago and this sounded very similar. I cut it in half, used left over mashed potatoes and used the frozen green beans! I like to layer the green beans on top of the hamburger and tomato soup mixture and I cover the whole thing with the mashed potatoes.

I enjoyed this recipe, however mine seemed like it had too much tomato soup, next time I will make with 1 can. Also, not sure if you’re supposed to assume, but I made the mashed potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper…

No it was perfect didn’t change anything.

I rated it high because it’s simple ingredients and takes a few minutes to prep. At first I was skeptical because I didn’t think the ingredients would taste good together. My picky 7 year old liked it and my husband said “it’s not too bad!” It’s a good meal when things need to be done quick and taste pretty good.

This was a big hit with my family and it’s not easy pleasing everyone at once. I will definetly make it again and I didn’t change anything.

Easy to make but I also did alter to my families liking which is super easy to do with this dish. Great for kids and adults alike

Made with sliced, canned potatoes, but, in hindsight, I don’t think that was a good idea. Next time, I might try boxed instant potatoes. Also, this recipe is bland. Needs something….maybe garlic powder or Mrs. Dash????

I really enjoyed this recipe. I used all ingredients but added diced celery, carrots and 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes sauteed with the onions and ground beef. I had fresh parsley to use up and added that to the mashed potatoes with milk & butter.

This was just delicious! Comfort food on a cold rainy day! I too did the 1 can tomato soup and 1 can mushroom soup as other reviewers suggested. Also added half a pound more hamburger, other than that just made my usual mashed/whipped potatoes, loved it! Will be making this again for sure!!

This came from 8th grade Home Ec Class. Tomato sauce (no Tomato Soup, please); no cheese (please). Basic recipe that men seem to really like (meat and potatoes). Make it when I have leftover mashed potatoes to use up.

Loved it! Great recipe to clear out your pantry! I made a few changes but overall it was great. I browned the meat with garlic powder and onions. For the potatoes I used instant because it was what I had on hand (2 packages buttery homestyle, then some sprinkles of regular). I did what someone else suggested and put an egg, garlic and seasoned salt in the potatoes, and I also used cream of mushroom with the tomato soup. I mixed a can of diced tomatoes with garlic, onion and pepper along with a frozen bag of mixed veggies along with the green beans. Added a few squirts of worchester, ketchup, sprinkle of salt and pepper, cheddar and parmesan shredded cheese then mixed the mixture all up and placed it in a pan with the potatoes and cheese on top. SCRUMPTIOUS!

Easy to prepare, delicious to eat. I didn’t make any changes.

I make this once a week for my family and it makes a great dish to take to a potluck. My recipe is out of the Better Homes ad Gardens New Cookbook on page 245. The differences/substitutions are it only calls for 1 can beans, 1 can of tomato soup and 1/2 cup onion and 3/4 tsp salt & 1/8 tsp pepper. Since this recipe doesn’t use any salt pepper it could be the reason some think it is bland. My recipe says to add 1 beaten egg and milk when you mash your potatoes and to make them stiff enough to hold shape so you can drop the potatoes in mounds atop meat mixture sprinkle with cheese. I serve garlic bread as a side. Yummy!!
