Firehouse Haluski

  4.8 – 12 reviews

This meal is quick, simple, and affordable. This is something I cook at the firehouse, and it’s really filling. Serve bread with Romano cheese sprinkled on top.

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 35 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (12 ounce) package kluski noodles
  2. 2 heads cabbage, cored and cut into bite-size pieces
  3. 1 onion, chopped
  4. ¼ cup water
  5. 1 pound kielbasa sausage, diced
  6. ¼ cup vegetable oil
  7. 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  8. salt and ground black pepper to taste
  9. 4 eggs, beaten

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil and cook kluski noodles until tender, about 8 minutes. Drain, chop noodles into small pieces, and set aside.
  2. Cook cabbage and onion, covered, in a large pot with water over medium heat until tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat and transfer cabbage and onion into skillet with a slotted spoon. Cook in the hot oil until vegetables begin to brown, about 10 minutes; stir in kielbasa and continue to cook until sausage is heated through. Stir mustard seeds into cabbage mixture; season to taste with salt and black pepper. Stir chopped kluski into the mixture.
  3. Pour eggs over the noodle mixture and stir until eggs are set, 3 to 5 minutes.

A good recipe, but needs some tweaks. First of all, 2 heads of american cabbage are way too much. Even if you reduce it all, it’ll just be way too much for any pan to hold. So you’ll definitely want to reduce to 1 head of cabbage. I’d also season the kielbasa. Was also a bit plain so maybe i’d throw some melted butter instead of oil.

I used two pounds of kielbasa, one head of cabbage, and added a whole bulb of minced fresh garlic. WOW… I LOVED it.

I thought this sounded kind of weird but wanted to try it because of all the good reviews. I only used 1 cabbage, 2 eggs, and home made noodles. We thought it made a good and filling week-end breakfast.

Yum Yum. I personally never heard of and don’t know what kluski noodles are, so I used bow tie. I was surprised adding egg made the dish pop!

My family loves this recipe. The first time I made it, I followed the recipe. It was great. The next time, I needed to make changes, as I had no kielbasa. I substituted some ground beef (a little under a pound) and a few strips of bacon. I also made it the easy way – in an instant pot. I started on saute mode, cooking the beef and bacon. I removed it, chopping the bacon when cool, and then cooked the onion in the remaining drippings (no oil) in the instant pot, still on saute. Then I added the cabbage and mustard seed and cooked in saute mode until the cabbage was wilted. Then I added 2 cups of chicken stock and 16 ounces of egg noodles. I stirred well and sealed the instant pot. I cooked at pressure for 9 minutes, followed by a quick pressure release. I then added the eggs and about a cup of frozen peas that I had thawed. Then I let it all sit for a few minutes to set up the eggs and cook the peas. Finally, I added a heaping tablespoon of sweet Bavarian mustard and salt and pepper to taste. My son preferred the latter version, and he is the picky one in the family. It’s a great recipe that you can adjust to accommodate what you have on hand!

Doubled the Kielbasa but made per direction otherwise. Very tasty and filling!! Definitely a keeper And easily modified for tastes or what you have in fridge to use up!!

Super good comfort food and the right mix of ingredients! It’s light and not too rich or heavy.

I made this and loved every single bite. It is well balanced, with veggies to counter the heavier meat. I seasoned with hot sauce, because I put hot sauce on everything, however, the combination was beautiful. Thank you fire chef for sharing these straightforward instructions on a fantastic dinner! This one is saved to my facortives and will certainly make it again!

This is amazing! I like cabbage, but my husband is not a big fan, but he is on seconds as I write this. I admit I made it my own by adding some items, ham base to the cabbage, garlic powder and Italian seasonings and red pepper. I also added carrots and grape tomatoes as they were in the fridge . THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL BASE RECIPE! I also used just regular egg noodles. I only used 1 cabage and 1 1/2 pounds of kielbasa. I am so happy about this recipe and it will definitely be a new staple in our dinner rotation!!Oh man!! I forgot the eggs! I will definitely do those next week! Yay cabbage!

We loved it, it was easy to make and very filling. For the amount that is made in the recipe there was not enough meat. next time I will add another pound of meat, maybe 2.

Yum. I didn’t have any kluski noodles, so used regular egg noodles, but otherwise followed the recipe. I was very happy with the results, it made A LOT of food!
