Very, very good. I didn’t have cumin and paprika, instead I added 1 tsp Chipotle seasoning and 2 T Worcestershire Sauce. I used ground chicken, instead of beef. Will make again!
Easy and a family fav!
I made it as per directions and it’s simmering right now, but the taste test is way too sweet. WAY too sweet. Maybe cut back on the brown sugar some since tomato paste does have its own sugars. I’ve added some crushed red pepper flakes and a little bottled barbecue sauce and hope that tampers some of the sickly sweetness. I like tangy. In case of emergency, I have Louisiana style hot sauce. If I want sweet, I’ll eat some ice cream.
We omitted the sugar and my family LOVES this recipe 🙂 we make it a few times a month!
added bell pepper
I have been making this recipe for years. My family loves the robust flavor and the simple ingredients.
i added red pepper flakes instead of chili powder. Also, added worcestershire sauce, a squeeze of ketchup & mustard. I really enjoyed the tang from the vinegar. Best i’ve made so far!
I’ve made this recipe multiple times and it is a family favorite! And personally my favorite. It is extremely flavorful. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
This turned out very good. Made as written but did add some worschestire sauce. I will make this again
Hubby loved it
Delicious!
This recipe has been on this site for at least 18 years 🙂 Sorry it took so long to provide feedback!! When my kids were young, they loved this recipe. It was my go to recipe for sloppy joes! I still make it today!! Thank you!
Most like sloppy joes we remember. Will add more vinegar, some catsup and a little more brown sugar next time.
This is a great Sloppy Joe recipe but I did add about a can of tomatoe sauce and extra sugar to give it a more “sloppy” consistency. My kids LOVED it so therefore…. I’d make it again!
These were easy to make. I made them one evening when we all really wanted Sloppy Joes but I was out of store-bought seasoning. I only used 1lb. of beef, and I omitted the red pepper because I didn’t have one on hand. I also omitted the salt. I served them with a slice of raw green pepper on top. These Joes were spicy, and didn’t need salt at all. If I were to make them again I would probably add the red pepper, use the correct amount of beef and omit or greatly reduce the brown sugar. We all agreed they were too sweet (even my 10 y.o.) and could really taste the sugar in them.
Made it as stated, excellent savory flavor, great with vegetables.rice, noodles. Don’t forget the salt and black pepper. Quick to make, instructions are perfect. Thank you HBIC
Add a tablespoon of mustard powder with the seasonings and you’re gold. Top it with coconut spinach (search for it on Post Punk Kitchen) and your mind will be blown.
I love sloppy Joe’s but my husband hates ketchup so I found this recipe. What a waste… I should have known cause I usually cook on the fly and have a pretty good idea of how things will taste but I decided try this anyways. We hated it! It tasked like I just mixed tomato paste and chili powder together. I’m going to freeze it and use it to make chili next week so I don’t have to throw it away. I would not use this for a sloppy Joe ever again.
Made just a couple of changes. I used a lb of ground beef and used 1/2 lb hot sausage in the tube. I also used a green bell pepper vs. a red pepper. Otherwise, the spices were just about right. Tasted fantastic, will definitely make again!!
I looked this up online because I forgot to buy Manwich. I thought it might be too spicy, but it was delicious. I added a big blob of prepared yellow mustard, some squeezes of catchup and extra vinegar and brown sugar. Yum!
INCREDIBLE !!! This Is Not Your Momma’s Sloppy Joe’s ! This is a diverse flavor infused Sloppy Joe filling. Ca-razy good… In June 2013 I fist made these. I was without speech they were so good. So, I made more …a lot more … of these for a group of friends that came over, and people were coming back for seconds and thirds… A smash hit. zero left overs. As far as I’m concerned…this is thee best Sloppy Joe filling to be had. Should you love Sloppy Joe’s…try Emily’s and you’ll be without speech too because they’re so good. One thing to keep in mind…it can be “watery” and may need some simmering to reduce it to the proper consistency/thickness that you prefer.
