This produces a delicious, rich brown gravy with just a touch of sweetness. No one ever guesses the secret ingredient, which is cola, even though everyone begs for the recipe.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 5 hrs
Total Time: 5 hrs 15 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 4 pounds beef sirloin roast
  2. 3 carrots, chopped
  3. 3 stalks celery, chopped
  4. 1 clove garlic, minced
  5. ½ (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
  6. 2 tablespoons water
  7. 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
  8. 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  9. 10 fluid ounces cola-flavored carbonated beverage

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Place meat in a roasting pan. Sprinkle carrots, celery and minced garlic around roast.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the brown gravy mix and water, mixing into a smooth paste. Add onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup and cola-flavored carbonated beverage. Pour over the roast.
  4. Cover pan, and cook 1 hour in the preheated oven.
  5. Reduce oven temperature to 225 degrees F (110 degrees C), and continue cooking 2 hours. Remove from oven, and turn roast over so that the top is now covered with the gravy. Cover pan, and return to oven for a minimum of 2 hours.
  6. Remove from oven, and let meat rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

I won’t make pot roast any other way. My family loves this recipe. I always serve it with German dumplings and a salad

You can definitely use a cheaper cut of meat like chuck roast and it still comes out well. I have used low sodium mushroom soup and brown gravy and it still tastes good.

I added a whole onion and 4 extra carrots and 8 or 9 small to medium sized golden potatoes. We like lots of vegetables with our pot roast. I don’t change much of the gravy part but I sometimes add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and always a tablespoon of Kitchen Bouquet to give the meat and gravy a nice dark color.

Mouthwatering and perfect.

I always honor the chef who post a recipe by following the process of flavors and cooking that has been invested to the last ingredient. We absolutely loved this pot roast! And the next day as the roast had been sitting in all of the delicious gravy? My oh my!

Excellent recipe for pot roast!! I cut up 3 cloves of garlic and added 2 tablespoons of olive oil to my Dutch oven and sautéed the garlic – once the garlic began to brown, I removed the garlic and set aside. With the Dutch oven hot I seared the pot roast on all sides for about 2 minutes each side. Once I finished with that I placed the sautéed garlic on top of the roast and poured the mixture over the pot roast and covered the Dutch oven and cooked it at 275 for 1 hour. At the end of the hour, I pulled it out of the oven and turned the pot roast over and added the cut up onions, carrots and potatoes. With the lid on I placed the Dutch oven back in the oven at 275 and slow cooked it for 4-5 hours – Absolutely delicious!! The meat was so tender you could cut it with a fork and the vegetables were done to perfection!

Edit to original review: I’ve made this recipe probably 50 times by now, and feel the need to say that it is MUCH better if you cook it 8 HOURS rather than 5. Also, I add mini red potatoes, which the family loves. Great recipe!

Very tender. Easy to make. No leftovers.

Our family has always loved a good crock pot roast, although this one is written as an oven cooked roast we choose to do it in the crock pot.

It was delicious. My family loved the gravy. I did add more carrots. I will make this again soon.

Great recipe. I believe when you rate something you need to cook it as the recipe states. If you make alterations then you are not rating the recipe provided. Followed this exactly, except added mini red and golden potatoes to the pan.

I did not make any changes. Delicious and tender!

So I used this recipe, however I seared the meat and then cooked it in the crockpot. Threw a little bit of wine in there too, and it came out AMAZING. Will be making again. Whole family loved it and it was super flavorful.

Wonderful!

I used a sirloin tip roast and followed the instructions as is. We all thought this roast and gravy were absolutely mouth watering! It was simply “delicious”; the meat was so tender!! This recipe is a Keeper!

I made this tonight for my Sunday night meal and it turned out really good . I give this only 4 stars because of the length it was in the oven I could have cooked in crockpot where the roast would have been fall apart yummy…don’t get me wrong it was quite tasty and the clean up easy ! The most important thing is my BF had a good meal he loved after coming off the road ( Long Haul Driver ). I would fix this again

Everyone loved it, even the kids!

Made this for dinner tonight! My husband is in Heaven. I did change a couple of things. Added a medium onion quartered/separated, 3 cloves sliced garlic,4 Russets, quartered and a Guinness instead of cola! Braising the meat with a coating of flour, salt and pepper made the Gravy nice and smooth.
