It has an interesting thick and soupy texture, but I don’t know why people on here are so scared of seasoning. Deepen the flavor with more soy sauce, some sesame oil, some oyster sauce…anything really.

Loved it just the way it was written. You could make any changes you wish. Simple and delicious.

Easy to make and ever so good. I added 3 Tablespoons of minced garlic, 3/4 teaspoons of ground ginger and 2 carrots sliced diagonally. My husband loved it!

We added a ton of veggies and started by searing some fresh chopped garlic. Excellent recipe to play with!

This is surprisingly simple and delicious. UPDATE: I have made this many times and prefer the simplest version. I have experimented with chicken, chicken stock, red bell pepper, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, canned chop suey veg. But the very best way is to use pork and the simple veg in the original recipe: celery, onion, bean sprouts. We did add salt, substituted molasses for the sugar, and increased the amount of liquids and cornstarch. We like it with rice.

Stew beef cut into small pieces, 1 diced sweet onion, 2 celery stalks sliced, fresh bean sprouts, fresh peapods, a can of diced water chestnuts, soy sauce and corn starch and water to thicken. Just made some and it was delicious.

Great recipe. I used brown sugar instead of white and replaced snow peas for the sprouts.

Taste great and was easy and not too long! I served with rice- My variations -Bean sprouts, bok cho, water chestnuts, I also used chicken broth instead of water and definitely adds more flavor! I seasoned the pork generously with salt pepper and garlic powder

Made it with a few alterations. Used 2 Tbsos of oil instead of shortening, and added a couple of cloves of garlic with the onion and pork. Omitted the celery and bean sprouts ad I used a can of Chinese vegetables instead, which includes both. Also added a can of sliced water chestnuts and 2 Tbsps molasses. Seared the pork, onions and garlic, then put everything except the cold water, cornstarch and sugar in a pressure cooker and set it for a stew. Thickened it afterwards. It was great. The molasses is definitely the missing ingredient in the recipe as written.

I added mushrooms, water chestnuts, and a pinch of minced garlic to mine. Fabulous recipe to pass along to my adult children.

Love this recipe. It’s quick and easy. I substituted vegetable stock for the water, omitted the salt, and added water chestnuts, and it turned out great!!

This is a great basic chop suey recipe. I used chicken instead of pork and chicken stock instead of water. Used fresh bean sprouts and added baby bok choy and mushrooms to the vegetables. I will make this often. Thanks for the recipe.

This was delicious!! I substituted ground beef for pork. Doubled the hot water and added green pepper, mushrooms and water chestnuts. I was looking to make it similar to what I recalled from my childhood!!

sauteed pork with 2 tsp garlic and dash of soy sauce. When adding water, also added chicken broth/stock. instead of bean sprouts, added cup of frozen vegetables since what I had on hand. Otherwise would prefer fresh-carrots, brocolli, mushrooms, water chestnuts. etc.

This is a good base recipe, I did add a few things that my Mother taught me for hers. Add an 1/8 teas.ground ginger ( or a 1/2 in piece of whole ginger) Bean sprouts, water chestnut and the Molasses, about 1/4 to 1/2 cup. I used chicken stock instead of water. This is a good way to try different vegetables…..boc choy ,baby corn, mushrooms, and snow peas.

This was delicious! I made it with some friends who don’t have a lot of experience in the kitchen and it turned out great. We used a frozen veggie mix that had already had some kind of sauce on it – 10000000% recommend! Everyone is asking for the recipe.

This recipe was easy and delicious. After reading the reviews I too replaced the 1 cup of water with chicken broth and omitted the salt. This will definitely be a recipe that i remake for years to come.

This is a really good, basic recipe that you can do anything with. I read the reviews, added the molasses, and added a bag of fresh stir fried vegetables. Also I doubled the sauce recipe. One person added more soy sauce to the dish and I added fresh ginger that comes in a bottle. I will make this again. Thank you
