This beef loaf recipe is a family favorite for my husband, me, and our two teenagers. This has been produced for the past 19 years. Despite attempting various meat loaf recipes, I keep returning to this one.

Ingredients
- 2 eggs, beaten
- ¾ cup milk
- ½ cup dry bread crumbs
- ¼ cup chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon crumbled dried sage
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- In a bowl, lightly mix the beaten eggs, milk, bread crumbs, onion, salt, black pepper, and sage together until thoroughly combined. Gently work in the ground beef until mixed; press the meat mixture into the prepared loaf pan.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the loaf is no longer pink inside and the juices run clear, about 50 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the loaf should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
- While the meat loaf is baking, mix together the ketchup, brown sugar, and dry mustard powder in a bowl until the sugar has dissolved. When loaf is done, pull from the oven, and spread topping over the loaf. Return to oven, and bake until the topping is set, about 10 more minutes.

That is the best meatloaf I have ever tasted. My husband raved about it, too. Thank you, Beth!!!
I use this recipe with plant based burger (think Beyond burger) and my meat eating husband loved it! He loves the sauce topping.I don’t change anything, it’s that good.
Reminds me of the meat loaf that Mom used to make.
Excellent! A delicious traditional meatloaf that serves beautifully. My husband loves this. I used corn bread crumbs instead of bread and caramelized onions instead of fresh because I always have these items in my freezer. Thank you!
Amazing! The only change I made was I used one pound of beef because that was all I had.
SO easy a man can do it, Tashi loved it too.
no changes. back to the basics 🙂 No more Liptons Onion Soup mix. 🙂
I didn’t have mustard powder so I used mustard and it was great looking forward to the next time
This recipe was mouthwatering! I have never made meatloaf before so I followed the recipe exactly, however, I didn’t have any onion on hand. Despite the lack of onion, this meatloaf was delicious and I will surely make it again!
I made it as is but added some garlic powder. Also made it with 2.5 lbs. of meat so there’d be leftovers. Family loved it.
My husband love it! I made no changes. It is perfect.
Easy to make
My wife is strictly non-GMO. I used grass-fed ground beef, and I substituted crushed maize flakes for the bread crumbs. And, I added about 1/2 tsp of garlic powder. This is my favorite meatloaf recipe– quick and easy and tastes really good with steamed green beans and parmesan carrots.
This has been my go to recipe, (actually my only), recipe for meatloaf for over a year. I double it, and don’t change a thing. Wonderful!
My go to meatloaf!
Thank you for posting this recipe. I made it without the topping and it was really good. I did add a bit of granulated garlic because we like garlic with any beef but it turned out awesome for us. My husband is recovering from cancer treatment and needs bland food right now that doesn’t require teeth so this was a perfect meal for us. Thank you!
Excellent but I added a package of knorr onion soup ,corn, shredded carrots ,shallots , mushrooms. Then on top I put mashed tomatoes with ketchup and Worcestershire made into a sauce . OMG so yummy .
I have made this recipe many times and have to be honest!!! I have NEVER had a complaint about it!!! Thank you Beth for sharing this awesome Recipe!!!
Delicious as written!
Loved this! I have never had success with a meatloaf recipe before this. My husband absolutely loved it! The only changes I made were that I used a pork/beef mix, and left out the onions, since my family doesn’t like them. I added some onion powder to keep the taste. Thanks for sharing!
It’s a keeper!! FINALLY a meatloaf my husband likes!! I did add a few things to suit his palate, but used your great recipe as a base. I added some diced jalapeno, minced garlic, quartered pepperoni slices and a little bit of onion salt and onion powder. I also doubled the recipe for the topping. Loved the crusty bottom! Very flavorful and husband approved!
