The finest grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever tasted, with a gooey Cheddar and bacon interior and a crunchy Parmesan top! This is the ultimate grilled cheese, period!

Ingredients

  1. ¼ cup butter, softened
  2. 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  3. 8 slices cooked bacon
  4. 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  5. 8 slices sourdough bread

Instructions

  1. Mash together butter and Parmesan cheese in a small bowl until evenly blended.

  3. Make sandwiches by placing two slices of bacon and one slice of Cheddar cheese on half of the bread slices. Top with the remaining slices of bread.

  5. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Spread some of the butter mixture on the top of each sandwich. Place sandwiches butter side down in the skillet. Spread the remaining butter mixture on the other sides. Cook until golden brown on each side, about 3 minutes per side.

  7. To serve, cut in half diagonally.

I’m tired of “best” recipes for common things–ie the “best” way to scramble eggs. There may be new tricks, but a grilled cheese sandwich boils down to using a favorite bread, a favorite cheese, and favorite add-ins. I do like the tip for using the parm on the outside of the bread for a crispy outside–but still feel that cheddar is not the best melting cheese for the inside. Colby–now kind of hard to find–was the fave cheese when I was growing up. One of my preferred cheeses these days is pepper jack. Bacon is a yummy add-in, but tomato slices, olives, ham, pesto , chutney, or thin slices of onion are all good, too, although I would suggest limiting the number of additions that will practically fit into a melted sandwich to 1 or 2.

Best grilled cheese sandwich ever! I always make grilled cheese sandwiches with the butter on the outside, but adding Parm took it to another level. I also made it with white American cheese to add a creaminess. Such an easy way to make a favorite even better. I will make my grilled cheese sandwiches this way from now on!

We have Grilled Cheese and Tomato (or Chicken Noodle) Soup for our “Date Night/Afternoon Bingo” at church. We alao have Havarti cheese. Usually Havarti/Cheddar, American/Havarti and of course lots of butter on the bread, but we would use English Muffin Toasting Bread instead of sourdough. Nice and crispy, buttery! We go through lots of “seconds” with around 75 sandwiches. Will try the bacon idea and parmesan crust on the bread this time – cannot wait to try them!

We use Hellmans mayo instead of butter for grilling the outside of the sandwiches. It adds fantastic flavor and toasts just like traditional butter or margarine. Will never go back to using any other oil for the pan.

ok no photo my son ate it already lol he very picky eater I couldnt find the exact cheese to mix with butter but something similiar in specialty cheese section wasnt expensive at all I used pre cooked bacon also think can explore differ cheese to mix butter next time i have extra butter for next time lol

The Parmesan makes a unique “crust” to this sandwich but 1 c is way too much!? I halved it and sprinkled some dry parsley flakes to make the butter/sandwich look pretty. The P.R. is pretty strong and does dominate over the cheddar so either need a sharper cheddar or maybe adding tomato slices will help bring some balance. Really liked this and would make again but won’t replace the good ol’ grilled cheese! Thanks Nevadamommy!

It’s good for starters. I add a slice of Swiss or Mozzarella cheese and Cheddar cheese with the bacon in the middle. The kids like that the best, and I add thinly sliced onion and tomato and grill it all up with the Parmesan crust.

All of the ingredients were a good combination for a great grilled cheese, except for the butter—do what I do and make grilled cheese with mayonnaise on the outside of the bread and it will be divine.

All I added was 3 thinly sliced tomatoes and garlic salt I usually make chilled cheese sandwich with Jarlsberg cheese, thick cut peppered bacon, and tomato slices. I add the garlic salt to the softened butter.
