Yield: | 14 mini corn dogs |
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
- 7 hot dogs, cut in half crosswise
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Ketchup and mustard, for serving
Instructions
- Heat 2 inches of oil in a large heavy pot to 375 degrees F on a deep-frying thermometer. Line a plate with paper towels.
- Insert wooden ice pop sticks or skewers securely into the hot dogs.
- Meanwhile, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a medium bowl.
- Whisk the eggs and buttermilk together in a large bowl. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and whisk to combine. Pour the batter into a tall drinking glass.
- When the oil is hot, dip a hot dog into the batter to coat thoroughly, then add it to the oil. Repeat with as many as will fit comfortably in the pot. Fry, turning occasionally, until puffed and golden brown all over, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to the lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs, returning the oil to 375 degrees F between batches.
- Serve immediately with ketchup and mustard.

Thank you so much.. I Love corn dogs and loved this easy recipe.
Good recipe! Everybody loved them. The glass trick is great idea; however,
I saw Alton Brown use it with his corn dogs a few years ago, so don’t give Valerie ALL the credit 😉

OMG….So easy, dipping mini hot dogs in cup made this recipe a success…will make these again for 4th of July….
Oh my gosh, do yourself a favor and make these! I have never fried anything in my life and was able to make these without issue! Putting the batter in a tall glass is genius. Friends loved these and they were a party favorite.
This was a great idea thank you
I had a craving for corn dogs and couldn’t find anywhere near by that served it, so I was happy to find this recipe! It was very easy to make the batter; however, I wasn’t able to easily dunk the hot dogs into the batter in the tall glass. I had to put the batter in a shallow bowl and cover the hot dogs in batter using a fork/ my hands! Easy to fry and VERY delicious!
Let me start off w/my 1st attempt at corn dogs was at least 10yrs ago, a huge & messy disaster. This recipe was simple and tasted fantastic. Loved the glass idea! Can’t wait to try the other foods from this episode. You made it look so easy & fun to make I just had to try it. SOO Valerie B. my Family, Myself & my kitchen(no oil catching fire) want to say Thank You!!
