Yield: 30 servings

Ingredients

  1. 30 beef hot dogs
  2. 30 string cheeses
  3. 30 slices (rashers) thinly cut bacon

Instructions

  1. Split the hot dogs in half lengthwise, making a pocket but not cutting all the way through. Stuff each one with a string cheese. Starting at one end, wrap a slice of bacon around each stuffed hotdog, then place each on a square of foil and wrap up.
  2. Throw the wrapped hotdogs on a hot campfire grill and cook, turning occasionally, until the hot dogs heat through, the cheese melts and the bacon slices crisp, 10 to 15 minutes. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes, then unwrap.

This was quick and easy and came out perfect! However, the weather was nasty so instead of on the grill I did it in the air fryer.
Nathan’s all beef hot dogs, I did cut the mozzarella sticks in half lengthwise and only put half the mozzarella in each hot dog and wrapped with applewood smoked bacon. Put in air fryer for 15mins on 400 degrees. Perfect!!

I took a picture but cannot find where I can post it.

Spray the foil with cooking spray. You won’t have a stuck mess. The fire has to be really hot for the bacon to cook. Hope this helps. Great camping or bbq food

I did the oven method because it is winter and cleaning out the freezer. This became a greasy melted cheesy mess. It was good but probably not again .

When I was younger(I’m 65 now) my mom made a similar style, only she put in oven on sheet, with toothpicks holding everything together.
Man were they good. She also made fried bologna sandwiches with mustard.
Thanks for keeping the old ones alive!

After reading the other reviews, I par cooked the bacon. In 15 minutes it still wasn’t done. I cooked for another 15 minutes at a higher heat and it was finally done. The taste was delicious but next time I will wrap them with cooked bacon.

These hotdogs were a pain to make. The bacon took forever to cook and we ended up taking the hotdogs out of the foil. We ended up losing all the cheese out of the sides like some of the other reviews stated. We will not make these again. Still love pioneer woman though:)

We made these today on the grill and they were fantastic.   It did take longer for the bacon to crisp though.  We cooked them in the foil 30 minutes and unwrapped for 5. The cheese was perfectly caramelized and delicious.   I plan on teachING my cub scouts to make these on our next campout.

So I tried this recipe because it looked awesome. Having said that it took longer then 15 minutes to cook and whilst removing some prosciutto wrapped asparagus from the grill, one of the wrapped dogs exploded spectacularly sending bits of crispy bacon, steaming pork/beef weiner and molten mozzarella cheese into the bbq hood, the side of the house, my friends spiced rum and coke, my face, my new plaid shirt and my Czech Pilsner beer.

At that point I decided the dogs were done and removed the remaining 17 wrapped dogs from the grill. After spending 30 minutes unwrapping the tin foil from each dog, breaking several in the process we were able to eat them. The bacon was crisp, the cheese disappeared entirely, however as a whole the were very flavourful.
On a side not the bits of dog and bacon that were stuck to my face came off with relative ease and only left spotty second degree burns.
The beer survived.
