Ingredients
- 1 cup quick-cooking oats
- 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour or regular whole-wheat flour
- 1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 egg, beaten to mix
- 1 egg white
- 3/4 cup chopped dried tart cherries
- 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
- Cooking spray
- 1/4 cup “fruit only” apricot preserves
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, wheat germ, cinnamon and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the honey, applesauce, oil, egg and egg white until well combined. Stir in the oatmeal mixture until well combined. Add the dried cherries and walnuts.
- Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray. Spread the mixture into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out
- clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Put the preserves in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. As soon as the bars come out of the oven, brush with the preserves. Cool completely and cut into 12 bars, about 4 by1 1/2 inches each.

Reviews
These are so delicious, especially when they’re still warm.
Not bad. The bars came out dense and chewy after 30 minutes in the oven. With 1/2 cup of honey in the recipe, I thought they were going to be way to sweet but they weren’t. One small square was surprisingly filling – much more so than a store bought granola/snack bar. I would make them again. I might also experiment with different fruit and nut combinations.
These are awesome! I made my homemade apple chutney and used that instead of regular apple sauce, I used coconut oil instead of canola oil and used cranberries, raisins and dates instead of the cherries and they turned out delicious!!! Great little healthy yummy snack will make again soon 🙂
Been making these for years. The apricot preserves really do it for me. I can never eat just one.
I was looking for something to get me out of my breakfast rut and these did the trick. I used oat flour in place of the wheat flour, and ground flax seed in place of the wheat germ to make it gluten free. I like the consistency- they are dense, moist, and chewy. I think the reviewers who found them dry must have over cooked them. I don’t personally care for really sweet foods in the morning, and these have just a little sweetness from the honey and apricot preserves. Next time I will try changing up the nuts and fruit just to experiment, but this combo was really nice.
We love them… I am not buying the one in the store anymore… these ones are better and I know what is in the them…Just the best ingredients!!!
I wasn’t crazy about them. The toothpick came out clean at 30 mins so I took them out, spread the preserves and let them cool. Then I tasted a piece and it tasted kind of raw to me. I put them back in for another 5 minutes to see if that would help, but I doubt I’d make them again.
Like a homemade nutrigrain bar only 10x better. Soft and chewy and so good!
These were delicious. I made them for a work lunch with some health-conscious co-workers and they were a huge hit.
I used 1 cup of cherries because I really love dried cherries, and I also added about a half teaspoon of vanilla. I love the combination of cherries and walnuts with vanilla. I baked them for exactly 30 minutes, and I think any longer in the oven and they would have been too dry.

Also, I sprinkled chocolate chips on half of the batch just to try it… they were really delicious with the chocolate chips!
I followed this recipe exactly except for the nuts and was perfect. I was definitely able to taste that the nuts were a missing element. Next time I will make them with the nuts and they will be even better!!!!
