Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 small onion, chopped
- 1 small garlic clove, grated
- 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice, preferably basmati
- 3 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyere (about 6 ounces)
- 3 tablespoons chopped fresh flat leaf parsley
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
- 2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the rice and stir until lightly toasted, about 1 minute. Add the chicken broth and bring to a full boil. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 18 minutes.
- Meanwhile, melt the remaining tablespoon butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and stir until incorporated. Gradually whisk in the milk and bring to a simmer. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the Gruyere; keep warm, covered.
- When the rice is cooked, stir in the cheese sauce, parsley, chives and tarragon. Season with salt and pepper.

Thought I would try this as a side to frozen chicken kiev. ( thought I would try something new) My family ate a bite and left on the plate- my family aren’t particularly fussy but they definitely didn’t like it. Frankly 2 pots for a rice side dish- definitely not a repeat for my family.
Love it! Came out perfect! I had grill chicken, chopped it up. Made a perfect 1 bowl meal. Thanks!
Not good. Recipe is overworked and the combo of herbs isn’t good with the cheese. This thing Trisha has with “chives” over the last year! Seems she throws chives on everything. I love chives but not on everything ! There is a fine line between good and overdone.
This was kind of bland. I added frozen peas to give it more flavor.
This is an easy, yet tasty, side dish that everyone in my house will eat (even the very picky toddler)!
Easy and delicious.
Way too bland and dry
Very good
OMG so good! Saw Trisha make this today and I quickly added it to tonight’s menu. The outcome was better than I expected. So creamy and flavorful with the gruyere. I topped it with parsley and chives, and I added a splash or two more stock a couple minutes before serving, to thin it out a tad. Will make this a lot!
