The air fryer makes a perfect grilled cheese sandwich. The circulating hot air not only toasts the bread to crisp golden-brown goodness, it also melts the cheese from the crust all the way to the center of the sandwich. This recipe offers numerous options for cheese and bread, making it easy to create your own version of the ultimate grilled cheese.

Yield: | 2 sandwiches |
Ingredients
- 4 slices bread, such as white, rye, brioche, sourdough, potato, whole wheat or pumpernickel
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise or soften unsalted butter
- 4 ounces sliced melting cheese (about 6 slices), such as American, Cheddar, muenster, havarti, Swiss, fontina, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, pepper Jack or provolone
Instructions
- Lay the bread slices on a cutting board or work surface. Spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or soften butter over each slice. Flip the slices over. Top 2 slices with 2 ounces cheese each. Cover each with the other 2 slices of bread, making sure the mayonnaise or buttered sides are on the outside.
- Place both sandwiches in a 6-quart air fryer. Cook at 375 degrees F until the tops are golden brown, about 4 minutes (see Cook’s Note). Flip the sandwiches and continue to cook until golden brown all over and the cheese is completely melted, 2 to 4 minutes more. Cut each sandwich in half and serve immediately.
