There were 9 in my family growing up and this was a inexpensive way to feed a lot. This recipe will satisfy anyone’s sweet craving of chocolate.
Ingredients
- 5 heaping Tbsp. Hershey’s cocoa
- 1 heaping cup of granulated sugar
- 1 heaping cup flour
- 1 cup of water
Instructions
- Mix well, bring to a boil, turn to medium heat. Stir gently, to keep from sticking, until thickened. Pour over hot homemade biscuits with a dab of butter.

I’ve been trying to find a recipe made with Hersey liquid cocoa and haven’t find it at all. So I’m going to try this one, I know Paul is great at things like this from the south. When I was a kid my Great Grandmother would always make my brothers, my sister, and myself Chocolate gravy back in Arkansas. When I went to Visit my family out there about 7-8 years ago I got to eat it while I was in school. So know that I’m a Mother of all boys I would like to have my children try this and see if they like it. My Boyfriend from Tennessee says that it sounds gross but what does he know. So thank you for the recipe will see how the kids like it or not.
This over all an ok recipe. Its good for a starter cook.
I read the other reviews and made some adjustments. I only added 4 tablespoons of cocoa, I cut the flour in half because I had a feeling it would be too thick. Instead of water I added milk. At medium heat this cooks very fast. It was very thick therefore, I took the pan off the burner and added another 1/2 cup of milk. It was still thick but the milk cooked in nicely. I kept the sauce off the burner to cool. Another 1/2 or more of milk could be added to be much thinner.
I used this recipe because my regular repice was not to be found. Yes I would use the basic idea along with my changes, added a little butter, salt and vanilla like Rob suggested.

I’ll go the easy route next time. Jello brand chocolate hot cooked pudding & pie mix.
There was way too much flour in this recipe. I threw it out and started over with 2TBS flour and it worked better. I also added a pat of butter, pinch of salt, & vanilla. Much silkier and smoother than the “brick” that resulted from the first recipe.
My mother use to make this recipe…and I haven’t found a recipe like hers until now……this is SO great and decadent and I will use splenda instead…..unfortunately now I am a diabetic but this brings back memories of my mom.
My mom use to make chocolate gravy. she would make biscuits or pancakes it was so good
This recipe took me back to a time when Me own Grandmother made this Sunday Mornin’ staple for us! Tis sooo easy and the result tis decadent! I remember her whole house smelled wonderful. My copy o’ this recipe was lost until i found it here, now every time I make this gravy me memories o’ her fill me heart with joy once again. I can almost hear her voice in the kitchen!
Thank you for postin’ this recipe. Tis easy, fun and very very delicious!

this recipe was served in my family since the early 1900’s; especially on christmas morning- definately a kids favorite request
I’ve used a recipe similar to this for years, except I add a pinch of salt before boiling and a dash of vanilla after it’s been heated a while.
I wanted to make this for my girlfriend, but she is diabetic, so I substituted Splenda for the sugar. If you use a little more Splenda than you would sugar, it works well but has a slightly different consistency.
I have been eating this Chocolate Gravy for over 45 years and it always reminds me having breakfast with my mama. I use milk instead of water and now make it in the microwave instead of the stovetop. Less likely to burn that way.
