Pass on the artificial syrups and instead cook down some fresh strawberries for big berry flavor. Malt powder adds a little salty-sweet umami nuance without overshadowing the berries.

Ingredients

  1. 1 1/2 cups chopped strawberries
  2. 2 tablespoons sugar
  3. 1 14- to 16-ounce container vanilla ice cream
  4. 1/4 cup vanilla malt powder, plus more for sprinkling
  5. 2 tablespoons milk
  6. 2 tablespoons freeze-dried strawberries, plus more, crushed, for topping
  7. Whipped cream, for topping
  8. Fresh strawberries, for topping

Instructions

  1. Simmer the strawberries in a saucepan with the sugar and 2 tablespoons water, stirring, until thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Let cool.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a blender and add the ice cream, malt powder, milk and freeze-dried strawberries; blend until smooth. Divide between 2 glasses.
  3. Top each milkshake with whipped cream, malted milk powder, crushed freeze-dried strawberries and a fresh strawberry.
