Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon seafood seasoning, such as Old Bay
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 3 pounds medium shrimp (16/20), peeled and deveined with the tails on
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
- 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
- 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 14 bay leaves
- 6 cloves garlic, sliced very thin
- 3 dried hot chile peppers, like arbol chiles
- 2 small Spanish onions, sliced very thin
- 2 lemons, sliced very thin
Instructions
- For the shrimp: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Mix the seafood seasoning, salt and pepper together in a small bowl. Place the shrimp on a sheet tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle with the seafood seasoning mixture. Put in the oven and bake for 8 minutes.
- For the marinade: Toast the seeds in a dry pan over low heat for a few minutes, until just toasted and giving off a nutty aroma. Let cool.
- Whisk the toasted seeds with the vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil and white pepper in a large glass bowl. Stir in the bay leaves, garlic, chiles, onions and lemons.
- When the shrimp come out of the oven, put them into the marinade to let cool. Wrap the bowl tightly with two layers of plastic wrap. Put the bowl in the refrigerator and marinate, turning the shrimp in the bowl occasionally to mix well, for at least 8 hours and for up to 24 hours before serving. Also put a large glass bowl in the fridge to chill, for serving the shrimp.
- To serve: Strain and reserve the liquid from the shrimp using a medium sieve or strainer so the seeds can pass through (but it’s ok if some remain in the shrimp).
- Put the shrimp in the chilled glass bowl. Add some of the marinade back to the shrimp and toss. The shrimp should not be swimming in the marinade.

Loved it!!! Would add a little more spice next time
Excellent! I also agree that you need to marinate it for the full amount of time. I ate a few shrimp earlier than the 8 hours, and although they were good, they were much, much better the next day. The onions were tasty too!
I am making this for a weekend pool party pot luck. I hope it will a big hit!

I Loved it it was so refreshing and light!!!!!! Perfect for anything!!
This is a variation of a similar to a recipe that I’ve used for years, using commercial Italian dressing instead. Fantastically delicious! However, the shrimp MUST be marinaded for the full amount of time – or it doesn’t taste like much – hence the great reviews from people who followed the recipe and the terrible reviews from people who didn’t wait on the marinade.
Out of the four finalists, the POV with the most appeal to me, is Martie’s. These shrimp are easy and beautiful and appealing. I love to entertain and cook for big groups of people, so Martie got all of my 10 votes each day and I look forward to her helping me be a hostess with the mostest!
Loads of flavor in the marinade ingredients and so easy to put together – this will become a “go to” recipe for serving to my friends and clients.
Tangy, spicy and succulent recipe swimming in this super easy marinade. Great party or weekend poolside finger food.
We found this to be tasty, but I was hoping for something with a little more pizzazz. The food is fine, but we found the pilot to be a little fakey. Didn’t Martie know anyone at her Party? It looked like her “guests” weren’t very hungry or were hired actors who didn’t want to be there. It would’ve been more effective if they’d brought in ACTUAL friends, like Yvan’s family in Yvan’s pilot or the friends at the end of a Giada episode. I know she has great recipes and I’d probably tune in to get them, but I hope they spice up the party aspect of the show.
Nothing to brag about, would not want to serve this to my guests at a party
I tried it today for lunch. I had to find out what was in the marinade since Martie didn’t give any details during her promo. It was alright. Nothing over the top.
