While tostones are typically prepared in Latin America and the Caribbean by frying plantains twice, these are parcooked in the air fryer, smashed and then returned to the fryer to crisp them up.

Ingredients
- 2 large green plantains, sliced into 3/4-inch-thick rounds
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Kosher salt
- Sea salt
- Salsa verde, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat a 6-quart air fryer to 350˚ F. Toss the plantains with the vegetable oil and 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt. Add to the air fryer basket in an even layer and cook until tender, 3 to 4 minutes per side.
- Transfer the plaintains to a large piece of parchment and cover with another piece of parchment; smash each plantain with the bottom of a glass. Increase the fryer temperature to 400˚ F. Return the plantains to the fryer in an even layer (it’s OK if they overlap slightly) and continue cooking until crisp, about 4 more minutes per side. Sprinkle with sea salt. Serve with salsa verde.

Not the same as Frying in oil. If I’m going to make these I’ll make them the right way. Air fryer Kills all the flavor.
Worked really well, even with yellow plantains. Looking for the best way to shape them into cups…
I just made this air fryer tostones recipe. I substituted 1 teaspoon of fajita seasoning for the salt. Also, I used one large plantain that wasn’t green since I’m not a fan of green plantains. I was really happy with the results. Better than many restaurant tostones I have had since they were so fresh and delicious. Even my 8-year-old son enjoyed them. I’ll definitely be adding this recipe to my stash of go-to recipes!
